The old VFA was even worse. Port Melbourne champion goal kicker Freddy Cook got his jaw broken in a Grand final in the first quarter - about 1979 I think.

He came off and told Port legend Norm Goss Snr (whose two sons played for South) that he couldnt go on because of a broken jaw.

I believe Norm Snr's response was "You don't kick with your bloody jaw - get back on"
I think Matthews was charged with assault. My dad had been a reserves player at Port Melbourne, and after this episode he told all of us never to play Aussie Rules again. Didn’t work, of course, but we understood where he was coming from.

The whole footy tough guy thing is just total BS. I always remember the quote from the ex NFL player then commentator who
was at the World Trade Ctr on 9/11 who said he would never speak again of how tough football players were as he saw firefighters
and police running into the towers as he was running out.

        Yep, KT.
        That's a reality jolt.

Four person panel named to investigate the allegations, independent of the AFL.

That means the AFL won't be able to manipulate the outcome and will have to wear it - good!

Not any middle ground here, it either happened or it didn't, still gets down to one side or the other are liars. I love the Newbold email, reckon it shows which side appears to be telling the truth, hmmmmm

              I guessing this one
The report contains claims the woman wrote to Newbold when she was seven weeks pregnant claiming former coach Alastair Clarkson, assistant coach Chris Fagan and former Hawthorn player development manager Jason Burt had arrived at her home and removed her partner from the home after grabbing only a few belongings from the house.

The report claims Newbold responded to an email sent by the woman, saying it was “not appropriate” for him to become involved.

He has now told The Herald Sun he never saw the emails. “I want to refute that absolutely. It’s not my language I would use”.

With Newbold getting a job at the AFL, and that Essendon 1-day CEO getting the job (apart from being a religious nutter, was sacked by NAB for charging $650m off dead people)..... It just shows there is a dearth of talented executives in Melbourne to choose from.
Time to move AFL HQ to Sydney, just to get some talent in the executive ranks. Melbourne is too small-town.

I don't think it's that simple. People think just because there is a decent pay packet attached to a job then talented, hard-working,
intelligent "executives" will be beating down the door, but those people already have a job on good money because they are
talented, hard-working and intelligent. I expect football clubs find it really hard to get really good people working for them. The
                    latter don't grow on trees.

There would be more available people in Sydney than Melbourne. Essendon proved it. They couldnt find anyone better locally.

The book needs to thrown at Clarkson. The details dont need to be known, because right now all that we know is that "The AFL treats players like dirt", and that is bad, bad, bad for the AFL image. Without players, you have nothing.

AFL releases terms of reference for Hawthorn Hawks racism investigation, reveals end date

It's encouraging that the terms of reference are broad, the investigating panel members are independent of the AFL, and that the investigation is apparently being well funded. It is also good that the panel's report will be published.

All sounds good. Can't see how this doesn't end up in court with lawyers and claims for financial reparation involved.

It's a pity that even the link I provided doesn't link to the actual terms of reference but just paraphrases them. Something that was unclear to me from that statement - but which has been reported by afl.com.au - is that the terms of reference, unlike the original review by Hawthorn, are limited to the period from 2008-2016 and, perhaps also, only to a subset of the players that were considered in the original Hawthorn review.
