Free agency is driven by the choice of players. A club may want a particular free agent, but if the player does not want to go to that club, it's a non-starter.

I doubt free agency between the Sydney clubs would make either club "vulnerable". IMO it would be a good thing: it would mean players want to stay in NSW, rather than shifting out of the state. This is currently not the case - how many players have the Swans or Giants lost to free agency or been forced to trade in the past five years because the players wanted to go elsewhere?

Gettable covered the mid-season rookie draft.

Mentioned Naismith as a possibility to head to Geelong (11:36). Covered Sydney (11:48), said the Swans could have up to three picks. Players mentioned: Oscar McDonald, Harry Arnold, Marty Hore (ex-Melbourne, 1 game), Angus Schumacher (ex-Carlton, 1 game).

I can't recall us ever taking a Giants player in a trade. Shots have been fired the other way though, E.g. Jed Lamb, Mummy

I think Hore and Arnold have struggled alot with injuries

Hore ACL re co and broken toe etc

            no doubt have talent though

Angus Schumacher Draft Profile - Aussie Rules Rookie Me Central (formerly AFL Draft Central). looks interesting

Oscar still maybe ahead of the others listed above?

Oscar maybe ahead by a whiff at the mo but still no- could add some value to our VFL side, which is yet to win a game, and a possible 1-2 games when 3 or more talls are injured. In other words, no point in drafting him.

The Club has officially transferred Paddy to the Inactive List and we will pick someone at the MSD

Two picks (Reid & P McCartin) available to use, if we choose to.

That implies we will pick two at the MSD. Reid was already ruled out for the year. Even though he was highly unlikely to play again this season, there was no need to make it public by moving McCartin to the inactive list unless the club wanted to make a second selection (or have the chance to if the player they want is still there at the second pick).

Another possibility about making it public is they/Paddy wanted to kill off any speculation about him returning later this year.

If they didn’t put him on inactive list, and we are close to making finals or have made the finals, there would be some speculating about whether he will make a comeback, or he might be tempted to play if there has been significant recovery from the symptoms.

Might not be a factor or it might also be the reason they are taking a second selection - to make it clear to Paddy that the team wants him to have absolutely no pressure or temptation about coming back later this year.

For what it’s worth I take enormous comfort from the fact the club has taken such care with Paddy. All the best to him

I think the timing - just before the MSD deadline - suggests the timing was driven by that. I reckon it has been on the cards for a long time that he wasn't going to play again this year. Half the media has already retired him (who'd have known there were so many medical experts in the media) and, indeed, there have been plenty of statements on here that he can never play again.

If it is unconnected to wanting to have a second pick, they could have made the announcement at any time from now to the end of the season.

The reporting for several weeks has indicated we'll have at least two picks in the MSD, which suggests this has been in the cards for a while.

Announcing it during the bye week reduces the likelihood that John and the player doing the weekly presser will need to answer questions about it, which, in addition to the reduced coverage of the club this week, will minimise the airtime given to the story and thus scrutiny on Paddy.

Poor bloke; I really feel for him. I hope we see Tom against St Kilda, as it will mean he's fully recovered.

Exactly. Look what happened to Carlton.
                              Richmond are the latest victim.

Not on his current contract, but Carlton could chip in $200k p.a. I'd consider it.

Add a first round draft pick (a'la Jack Bowes) as well, then maybe.
