Not tall enough for ruck. Not sure we need a 3rd forward. Maybe we could turn him into a defender but thought doesn't excite me.

Silvagni is slow and can't kick, especially for goal, but I like him anyway. He can take a mark and never stops trying. Always gives 100%.

I don't know why he hasn't been tried as a defender. He's a RFA and should be gettable. If we lose the McCartin brothers, we could get a quick fix for our defence by signing the 2 free agents Himmelberg and Silvagni.

There's so much to play out with KPPs this season, it's hard to make any decisions just yet. It will be interesting to see how we handle Melican if he plays out the season without injury. He's a FA as well this year.

Silvagni? I think he is ok, but doesn't address our need for key defenders.
How about we grab Ethan Phillips of Port Melbourne in the MSD. Was VFL MVP last year. 198cm intercepting defender. Will he make it? Who knows, but would be a free hit...

Also people have mentioned Paddy Dow as a potential 'big-bodied mid'. Kept a eye on him in the last Swans VFL game, and I thought Sheldrick was superior in virtually all aspects - better disposal, worked harder defensively and more effective at clearances. However I am making my judgement from only one game.

Ethan Phillips was rated a strong chance to get rookie drafted last year, but once again was overlooked. You have to wonder why. I certainly don't know. He must be a player we've given consideration to, but who knows how he scores on the Beatsonmetre.

As for Silvagni, I think he didn't become a defender because he didn't want to be compared to his father. But if you look at the way he plays the game, he plays like a natural defender. He reads the flight of the ball well and is a very good contested mark when playing from behind. I have little doubt that he woulc make the transition to defender without difficulty.

I wasn't saying Silvagni is a priority signing, but that he might be more gettable price wise than TDK and he would fill a different need - forward ruck (I said ruck forward by mistake) / swingman or key defender.. Also much less risk than TDK in terms of salary cap commitment too.

As for Melican, it would be great if he can play out this season without injury, but with his history (like Reid), a lot of us would be nervous and thus we need more depth, not just to replace McCartin(s) and cover for Rampe's retirement in the next few years.

I hope we steer clear of HH. A trade war with the Giants we don't want.

If both McCartins go down, we need both a lockdown and a intercept tall defender - or two players that can do both.
Silvagni looks like the former (didn't we try to get his brother into our VFL team?), and HH is extraordinary at the latter.

Melican has a horrible injury history, and I thought his cards marked - but this injury crisis has given him an opportunity. I hope he can take it and become the tall defender we have hoped he would become.

He's a free agent, no trade required

I think we still need to be proactive with HH, but Aaron Francis looks like he could potentially play the Paddy McCartin intercept defender role. I think he's been pretty good in the games he's played so far and would benefit if he didn't have to play as a close checking KPD

I’ve always rated Silvagni- a bit underrated, a bit like Robbie Fox was for us a few years back. Very versatile player and could come at a fair price. We certainly need the Pelican to stay fit and hopefully we’ll get Tom Mc back after the bye. Was happy with Francis’s game and hope he kicks on from here. And McLean played well so all in all we looked a lot better. The Defense looked good, especially in the second half- well done boys!

                      From Twomey on Twitter -

"Clubs have until 5pm Tuesday to move a player to inactive list and open a mid-season pick.

Expecting around 17 spots to be open - adding Port Adelaide as pick 11, WCE/Hawks/Rich/GWS/Sydney for second round picks and the Swans for a likely third as well."

Swans for a third!!! Who are we inactivating and would we really expect a likely type to be available at pick 17?

Hawks will no doubt have a couple of Box Hill smokies, WCE scouring the WAFL, Richmond finding themselves in the bottom four have opportunities they wouldn't have expected pre season.

Ha ha, I don't think they will see it like that.

If we start poaching Giants players, they will start poaching swans players, and suddenly all those players who love the Sydney lifestyle, and previously wouldn't move, are now vunerable.

For the long term, we must keep the peace.

I have heard Fox sport saying Marty Hore , Oscar Mcdonald and Harry Arnold from Brisbane are on our radar. Getting HH would be great but not confident.
