My sneaky dream of trrying to lure Nick Larkey out of the cellar dwellars has evaporated - he's just signed a five year deal with Norf.

Shame to see such a talent waste his career, but anyhoo.

North are building a strong team. They may be closer to a premiership than we are.

North have been competitive without any wins. It's only a matter of time until their luck turns and they win a couple of games. They have games against the Eagles, Hawks and Suns to come, surely they will win at least one of those?

They are not as advanced in their rebuild as Hawthorn, who beat the Lions and Saints in the last month as well as flogging the Eagles. Upsets against top sides often portends more frequent wins in the next few seasons.

I agree with first bit (not necessarily second). Was just being snarky about my dream of Logan having a proven forward line companion for the next six years evaporating. Maybe we will get the next best thing in your man Himmelberg.

I was quoting a part of a post. I intended to demonstrate that the mid-season draft was more nuanced than merely drafting best available.

As for Buller, only one other club was likely to be even considering him: Essendon drafted another key forward from a WA club. Hawthorn chose a Victorian forward. Other clubs chose players from different positions. My guess is that we chose Buller because we already knew him whereas Essendon did not. Buller played underage football in the same teams as McDonald and Chad Warner.

I remember the discussion around Peter Wright when he was looking for another club, and hardly anyone wanted him. Jeremy Finlayson was also an easy get a few years back. There are always players around that can do better at a different club. Larkey and Mitch Lewis are a couple of late pick draftees who are doing very well.

If only Melican could stay fit, we wouldn't be in such strife. And if Tom McCartin would never have another concussion, wouldn't that be nice. Regrettably, we need to make some alternative plans. Himmelberg looks the best option right now, but there will be several clubs gunning for him. Ratugolea and Adam Tomlinson are a couple of other possibilities. We should be okay for key forwards. it's the key defenders I worry about.

We still have an interest in Barass from West Coast and he would fit perfectly in CHB in our spine next season. His contract is up and maybe West Coast would take a couple of our 2024 picks as they will be building for the future.

It's been a disappointing year. The development of Rowbottom, Campbell and Sheldrick has been positive. Otherwise it has been blighted by injuries and key players (Heeney, Papley, Hayward, Stephens) underperforming.

Anyway, I started thinking about how we're shaping up for next year and came up with the below.

                    Thoughts?

                    Best 22 2023 (before trading/draft):

                    FB: Rampe, T McCartin, Fox
                    HB: Blakey, Lloyd, Florent
                    C: Campbell, Rowbottom, Mills
                    HF: Gulden, Heeney, Papley
                    F: McDonald, Amartey, McLean/Reid
                    Fol: Chad Warner, Parker, Hickey/Ladhams
                    I/C: Sheldrick, Cunningham, Hayward, McInerney

Depth: Arnold, Buller, Corey Warner, Roberts, Francis, McAndrew, Sheather, Hall-Kahan (or delist).

Delisted: Wicks, Clarke, Melican, Rankin, Gould
                    Traded: Stephens
                    Retired: Franklin, P McCartin

                    Will develop: Mitchell, Edwards, Magor
Need to develop: Konstanty, Vickery, Owen

                    Trade priorities:
                    - Elite ruck
                    - Elite tall forward
                    - Elite small forward

                    Draft priorities:
                    - Elite mid with highest pick
                    - Tall defender
                    - Medium forward

                    Question marks:
                    - Can Reid return? If so, plays instead of McLean and improves the team.
                    - Will Hickey improve with a preseason or is this the start of the decline?

Tom Barrass is contracted on big money until 2025. He may be up for trade nonetheless, although I don't know why WC would trade him.

But how about Tom Fullerton of Brisbane, who is out of contract this year.

Now that we can’t make the finals this year should Gould be played under the guidance of Rampe and assess his performances. Should Stephens also play and to use his speed and take the game on and to get full confidence in his game. Looking to the future McAndrew should play to gain more experience and also keep Sheldrick in the firsts for the same reason.

I suspect that Francis or Arnold may have more upside than Gould in our backline……if we are going to give one of them game time.

                          TomMac
                          Rampe
                          Francis
                          Fox

Gould I suspect we still give us a trade late 40s to 50s to SA whether he plays or not in Snrs

I don’t think Gould will stay with us and will be fortunate to even get to another club

He is such an in between player and I suppose our hope was that maybe he could play a role like Rampe in the future but not many can achieve that level

If we package up Stephens and Gould maybe SA club maybe interested and we may achieve a better trade of picks back combined?

Stephens I think would still be in demand.

Yes to all of that. Also would throw in Warner Jr, Arnold and HHK at times too. Not everyone at once though.

Sheldrick really started to look like he was running on top of the grass rather than the heavy legs we tend to see in a players first few games when only 19/20 yrs of age and limited pre seasons / injuries.

The game suited his style of in and under perfectly.

The hopes were a Lachie Neale type of player of Luke Parker somewhat for Sheldrick when we took him in Rd 1 of the draft.

The experience of trying to match Lachie on the wknd will give Gus enormous confidence and no doubt he matches up on Parker or Mills most training sessions like a sponge and competitor.

Still blows my mind that a write up like below for the draft in 2011 had Lachie go at pick 58 !!!!!

Amazing actually cause even his stats at testing were much better than I expected for Lachie.

Dane Swan, Sam Mitchell, Lachie Neale and so many others down in those 40s or 50s draft picks. Extraordinary!

                              …….

                              Pick 58: Lachie Neale
Freo's fourth pick in the Draft
                              Nov 24, 2011, 8:14pm
South Australian Lachie Neale is the fourth selection for Freo in the Draft.

Pick 58 - Lachie Neale - 18yrs, 177cm - Lachie has had an outstanding season. He dominated U18 footy for Glenelg, played all 5 championship games for South Australia and finished the last 7 games in Glenelgs League side having a real impact. He is an inside midfielder who can play forward and apply terrific pressure. He is tough and wins contested footy. He has an enormous workrate and desire to get the footy. His clean hands and quick handballs are elite. Lachie is an outstanding character. Lachie’s testing at the state combine was impressive across the board. His standing VJ of 73 and RVJ of 95 is elite. His 8.24 agility, 14.2 beep and 3.00 sprint are all very good times as well. Lachie averaged 31.3 disposals, 5.6 marks, 5.1 inside 50s and 6.4 clearances per game at SA U18 level.

Pick 58 Fact - Reigning Brownlow Medallist Dane Swan was selected by Collingwood at pick 58 in the 2003 National Draft.

It's likely the height factor again I'd say. Many sides look for bigger bodied types (not us it seems!) as that appears to be the way the league is heading and clubs are having a lot of success with it! Case in point, Geelong's giants beating up our midfield midgets on grand final day.

But I do think there is a place for the shorter midfielders who are clean and elite at getting the ball on the inside and I hope that Sheldrick is someone who takes off and becomes one of those like the other players you mentioned.
