Why should we have to choose? The Cats and Blues and Lions have room for absolutely everyone. Bring them both in I say!Comment

2011: 3 trade (Armstrong, Morton, Walsh) -- Dud, GF hero, Dud
2012: none
2013: 1 RFA (Franklin), 2 DFA (Derickx, Laidler) -- Legend, Dud, ok
2014: none
2015: 2 trade (Sinclair, Talia) - Ok, Dud
2016: none
2017: none
2018: 2 trade (Clarke, Thurlow), 1 DFA (Menzel), Dud, Dud, Dud
2019: 1 trade (Taylor), 2 DFA (Brand, Gray) - Dud, dud, Dud
2020: 1 trade (Hickey) - Good
2021: 1 trade (Ladhams) - ok
2022: 1 trade (Francis) - ok
So I make that 1 legend, 1 worth it for a flag, 1 good, 4 ok, and the rest (ten!) were complete nuffies/duds.
You've concisely shown what's been wrong with our trades. Even Morton, who played one decent game in a Grand Final, only played 12 games for Sydney over two seasons. Many players we've acquired in trades in the last 10 years played fewer games than that.
We've used a first-round pick in more consecutive drafts than any other club. The last time we did not use a first-round pick was in the 2005 draft.
This is why I find it interesting that we could be trading aggressively this year. Perhaps we could lure a really good player from another club for a first-round pick, something we've not managed to do for over a decade."Unbelievable!" -- Nick Davis leaves his mark on the 2005 semi finalComment

You can add a few more to that list Mark! We on the other hand are handcuffed by playing by the rules. What on earth are we thinking- if we can get one top player then we’re fiddling the books????Comment
-
We should add Barrass to our haul of TDK and HH, and get West Coast to throw in their first rounder to sweeten the deal. The A/VFL leadership would surely endorse it.Comment

They are great points TS
I wonder why we have struggled so much to attract players to the Swans via trades ?
Secondly why have we been so unsuccessful in finding players via trades that would flourish?"be tough, only when it gets tough"

After Buddy we had a trading ban and a bulging salary cap that stopped us going after an A lister. Plus we chose to take our picks to the draft.
That may all be about to changeComment

North did a number on us by offering Heeney huge dollars that we matched and although he has had an All Australian Year and a strong year before that, he hasn’t been worth the huge dollars he was on.
The really good ones we have lost (though some we didn’t know would be really good at the time) include:
Mumford
Malceski
Membrey
Aliir Aliir
Cameron
Nankervis
Hewitt
Tom Mitchell
Dawson
Jetta
Hanners
Jolly
What a list!
Plus some ok ones:
Rohan
Newman
Zac Jones
Andrejs Everitt
Bird
Must have missed some from the last 10-12 years that others might mention.Comment

I think you may have got this one wrong. Listed players are full time professionals. Reserve list players are part time and no where near the fitness level of full time listed players.
You only had to see how Buller struggled last week. You need to give them time to adjust.Comment

Twomey offers update on the six unsigned free agents (sen.com.au)
The players named are: "Essendon pair Darcy Parish and Mason Redman, Adelaide’s Tom Doedee, GWS’ Harry Himmelberg, North Melbourne’s Ben McKay and St Kilda’s Jade Gresham".
It is mentioned in the article that we are interested in McKay (North Melbourne), and Himmelberg has been offered a five-year deal to remain at the Giants."Unbelievable!" -- Nick Davis leaves his mark on the 2005 semi finalComment

Why don't we hold off going after players like McKay this draft, instead next year invest game time in the players we already have eg Amartey, McLean, McDonald and also Buller. Find out or get a clearer idea as to which of them are stars for the making and which two could synergise and become focal points in our forward line of the future. We have a couple of years for the rest of the team to mature anyway.Comment

My issue with Ben McKay is his injury history. I don't doubt for a second he can seriously play and would be a terrific, big-bodied, strong-marking key defender that we could set and forget on if he was at his regular best. But he's played one full season - and missed some games again at the start of this year. A questionable proposition for the inevitable price.'Delicious' is a fun word to sayComment
