But he's played one full season - and missed some games again at the start of this year. A questionable proposition for the inevitable price.
Seems like a typical Carlton special to me, let him go there

Draft experts Matt Rendell and Cal Twomey give first indication into quality of 2023 class (sen.com.au)
Rendell says the draft quality isn't as good as last year.

Twomey says this year's draft is more mixed with regards to the positions of players, it's not a draft full of first-round midfielders.

They always say next year's is better. Last year it was all about 2023. Do they really know? Last year's wasn't supposedly much good because of covid. There is always good talent. Watch out for a kid called Ollie who plays for Kilsyth Under 9's. He is darn good for an 8 year old. Great balance, quick, has the ball on a string and kicks it a mile. How do I know? He plays with my grandson and he is pretty good also.

The general consensus both on this site, and in the general press is what you are proposing is exactly what we did this year with the focus on locking in the young talent for the long term. The criticism on all fronts is we should have been in the free agent market last year.

We are already investing game time into the players you have mentioned. Unfortunately both McDonald and Armartey have, together with many others, been injured for long periods this year which has hindered their development, however there is no doubting their talent.

Both McLean and Buller are at best long shots. Would love to be proven wrong, but know is the time to be active in the free agency market.

Mick McGuane is quoted in his newspaper column saying that if Buddy goes then Reid will probably get a one-year contract. Should Reid be given another contract or does the club terminate his services and fill his spot with a player via a trade or with a player from the draft. Thoughts? I am on the fence with this one.

Definitely happy for him to get one more year, even just to support the 2s growth and to add depth, of course medical would need to have there say

Disagree is a slight upgrade on either Amarty or McLean and if we let Hickey go would make a nice one tow punch with Ladhams, I also think we could experiment with him down back

What about Granger-Barrass is he worth an ask ?

Let’s think it through another way. We are likely to use at least three live draft picks, maybe four and then want to look at the rookie draft for say, Kirk.

If trade in a player that likely takes away a draft pick, possibly two, but that still makes three to five new players, possibly more.

Based on recent history, we will probably have a total of say six to seven retirements and delistings, but two won’t be replaced because Reid and Paddy are on the long term injury list and not taking a list spot.

So it is rather early, but at some stage we will need to be considering which day, seven players go, go allow us to recruit five new ones via draft/trade. Or which six go to allow us four new players.

                  Let’s say:

                  - Franklin
                  - Paddy
                  - Clarke
                  - Gould

We still have to find two to three to let go… Sheather? Wicks? Magor? Owen? Arnold/Buller if they don’t or pan out? Could be Tom McCartin if he has similar concussion vulnerability as Paddy.

Somone suggested Rankin earlier but there was one strong reply against that.

So with that in mind, I think whether Reid stays depends on whether we lose Tom McCartin and/or how Arnold/Buller develop.

If all three are retired/delisted, I think we need to keep Reid as a tall for another year.

I think it is too early to contemplate the delistings and retirements, though it is certainly relevant re trade targets and what picks we want to keep, upgrade or downgrade.

Reid has lucky to survive as long as he has given his injuries. Time to say thanks and bye bye.

My point was merely this. Some in the media and others seem to be of the opinion that we need to replace Buddy by going after some established key position forward. I was trying to make the point that if we rate Amartey and McDonald, we do not need to. They hopefully are our future with McLean and Buller potentially as backups. Today is the first time for ages if ever that Amartey and McDonald have shared the forward line. They have the potential to be a great team. But how can that synergy develop if we bring in another key forward next year or have Reid play on? It will be the same as when Buddy comes back in as the main man, that opportunity will be lost.

I agree. Surely we could develop our own key forwards rather than poaching them from elsewhere?

Sammy won’t get in the way of the McDonald/Amartey partnership. He deserves another extension as 2024 is his year of playing!????

Think we have enough to work with in our forward line once Buddy goes, we generally look better without him these days

Today might make it easier to get our hands on Barrass, hand over our first rounder and get it done

I’d agree with this if we get HH from GWS as we can always swing him forward.

Can’t see any reason at all you’d keep Reid on the list unless he’s prepared to play for peanuts and we see him in a mentoring role
