Agree with most of that, but I suspect that the injury prone Sheather might be unluckily delisted. Perhaps with the softener of a VFL contract, if he can get his body right? Which could mean that the injury prone Reid is shifted to the rookie list, to make a space for a draft pick.

I should add to Ludwig's post that the late experimental with Rankin as a small forward (which we need) is another sign he's being kept.

3yrs 25+ goals, not many doing that as a small fwd.

Coaches live him, doing something right.

He isnt a star but bang for buck id say he is fine and he isnt exactly holding anyone from getting a game that plays a similar role

Good move to re-sign Melican....crucial, especially if McKay goes elsewhere. He's not a dud but is in the same boat as Reid injury wise.

Yes. Good news. Melican is an AFL level depth player and we don't have many of those.

I listened to that. She didn't sound "bitter and twisted" at all, and she wasn't saying he was picking the town over our club. She said it worried her that he preferred our "lifestyle" pitch over Port's "football" pitch, because she believes football should take precedence over other considerations in decisions like this.

That is a defensible point of view, but I don't agree with her characterisation of his decision. I would say that he has decided he will play better football if he's not being subjected to lots of unwelcome attention. So it's not as black and white as she's making it out to be.

I'm sure he's coming to us aiming to win a premiership.

Sheather has been on the Cat B list for three seasons now. Normally there is a two season limit but it seems the AFL has recently given out dispensations on request, maybe temporary (ie the COVID-Limited-His-Development argument) or maybe just another instance of rubbery rules. Either way, we should probably work on the basis that if Sheather remains on the list it will need to be as a Cat A rookie (or senior listed player).

Could you check this out further. The Swans' website says Sheather came in the 2021 rookie draft, which would make him a 2nd year player in 2023, so might be eligible for a 3rd year in 2024, if that rule is still in place.

I also can't recall if the 2022 and 2023 injuries were related. So I'm not up to date on his current injury status.

Could you check this out further. The Swans' website says Sheather came in the 2021 rookie draft, which would make him a 2nd year player in 2023, so might be eligible for a 3rd year in 2024, if that rule is still in place.

I also can't recall if the 2022 and 2023 injuries were related. So I'm not up to date on his current injury status.

a) they are wrong; or
b) (more likely) they are using the naming convention for rookie drafts that dates from when they (ie the rookie drafts) happened in January, rather than shortly after the National Draft. Even then it was a confusing naming convention and is even more confusing now.

Sheather was an under-age contemporary of Gulden and Campbell. I watched them play U16 and U18 football together.

Footywire has Sheather contract status as ending in 2023 after 3 years which has him as Swans player in 2021--2023. Have not seen anything to suggest he is contracted for 2024.

I get why people are underwhelmed by Wayward, but I think that’s precisely because he does a lot of the unsung stuff like playing on the main interceptor to draw them away from the action (or kicking goals on them if they refuse to be drawn). I guess he’s a very important player structurally.

I checked out Will Edwards and saw that he is shown as a 2023 draftee, so I learned something new today about how information is presented for Cat B rookies.

That perked me up, because I thought I was too old to learn anything new.

Prior to Wayward getting drafted we told him to go away and work on building his tank. We drafted him regardless, but after 7 years his tank is still empty. I'm still waiting for his breakout game. I'd rather have Wicks who works harder, tackles harder and covers a lot more ground. Will is a late to the contest tackler. He doesn't get his shorts anywhere near dirty enough for me.

Let’s just start with ground covered and pressure: Wicks runs around a lot without achieving anything other than give away silly frees by either incorrect tackling or late contact. Has he ever taken an overhead mark? He is out marked every time by his opponent if the ball doesn’t come to his chest, which my daughter could mark. He doesn’t score vital goals; his general disposal is average at best the few times he actually gets the ball. Mate, chalk and cheese doesn’t even come close between these two! Wicks should not be anywhere near our best 22, ever. Wilbur has ability and has scores on the board over several seasons as others have pointed out. Wicks has played 50 games- maybe played very well in 3-5, been ok in another 6-10, and next to useless in the rest. That’s just not good enough to keep your spot in a team that wants to challenge!

Wicks seems to have got the silly stuff out of his game. He's no superstar but he is hard at it, but the coaches must like what he does as a role player. He kicked a few very good goals under real pressure in 2023.

Agree. Keep him on list. Very handy and can play at AFL level . Used to kick straighter. Hopefully that can return.
