I don't know many of the squad defenders you've mentioned - I hope we've found a few gems in there, but take little comfort that when we were devastated with injuries in that part of the ground, none of these players got a run. And then the club felt it necessary to recruit a(nother) journeyman defender in the off-season.
Time will tell I guess.Comment

Not an unreasonable position.
Jed Walter was born in Perth and lived there until 10 before moving to Gold Coast. Comes from an AFL supporting family.
Is that who the academy is designed for? I guess it is to provide the continual pathway.
I’ve no issue with the Jed pick being Gold Coasts, but 3 inside 15 is a bit rich with another in the 20’s. It should be capped.
I do note that Walter said he was 8 when they moved to the GC and he didn't take up footy until he was 9.
I think this was a brilliant result for a Club that has been plundered forever - will be more difficult for the Melbourne clubs when they can't just rely on the "take me home" factor out of the northern clubs to build their premiership lists.Comment

Welcome to the Swans Will and Caiden. Hopefully you both have long and successful careers with us.
On the academy selections, I imagine that at some point the discount will be watered down, and the only advantage that will remain is that the club has a right to trump the bid at the draft.Comment

I find it interesting that Collingwood was the club to bid on Cleary. They have been pretty astute over the past 2 years with their trades and drafts, and saw a lot in Cleary.
On the Andy Maher comments: these people forget that the northern academies spend a lot of time and money identifying and developing young lads in the best interests of the game, and they seem to think this happens overnight when 4 really good ones appear in one year. Well done to GC for trying to mitigate the "go home factor".Those who have the greatest power to hurt us are those we love.Comment

It’s a funny one isn’t Re backs and height vs leap and power.
Easton Wood
Dane Rampe
Almost identical height and weight (188cmish and 88kg ish) but they redefined matchups in the backline because they could border collie tall forwards into areas without real impact.
Then they could counter the opposition so hard that it evened any plus 1 defence we built into our defensive arc
Ie the transition was so fast it didn’t matter that we retreated from pressure upfield.
Which sort of made the plus one argument void if you can counter attack so fast that we are plus 2 forward on the counter"be tough, only when it gets tough"

What the academy critics forget (or conveniently overlook) is that each time an academy kid is drafted, it frees up another kid somewhere to be selected. The more talented academy kids in the pool, the more talented non-academy players are left to be drafted by other clubs.Comment

Hadn’t thought it through that far. Initial thinking was per year, but I guess if you got 4 in one year and 0 the next 2 or 3 it raises a question.Comment

This was the Blakey dilemma - if he comes from a footballing family, does that mean he can't have access to the academy? In a non-AFL state, how does he get access to quality development? Get a scholarship to Scotch College?
I do note that Walter said he was 8 when they moved to the GC and he didn't take up footy until he was 9.

I’m also keen to see GC have success. I certainly get why the academies are there, and absolutely support taking multiple academy players a year, but I just think 4 at the pointy end is taking things a bit far.Comment
