AFL trade news 2023: Tuesday October 10 trade blog, live chat, latest updates, done deals, signings, rumours

The gist of it is that all the VIC clubs were aware Schultz wanted to come home next year, but the Adams trade request has opened up salary cap space and a spot in the forward line for him to come this year.

I don't know if the Pies are posturing so that they can get a pick from us that they can use to recruit Schultz, despite the 5 year age difference?

The Pies problem is that they are now committed to Schultz, which means that they have to trade out Adams. We don't have to bring Adams in, so I'd say we've got the upper hand, a fact of which KB will be well aware.

Melbourne have got a similar problem with Fullarton / Grundy. Although our need for a ruckman puts us at something of a disadvantage.

I'm quietly confident that the Grundy and Adams deals will get done. If it was me I'd hand over pick 25 for Grundy and put the ball back in the Pies court.
    Agree, get Grundy done.
Not fussed with Adams, reckon he will be great for 1, ok for 2 but 3yrs is a stretch.

Also, lets not doubt the Pies way of getting around the salary cap.
Schultz Mrs will be picking up Eddies drycleaning for 250k a year if need be

I suspect he might have made a good defender had he been switched back early in his career. But it seems a bit much to expect him to become a true KPD at this stage of his career.
Agree with this. If Reid can play another season like his last one, he can be invaluable all over the ground. His bad injury record makes people forget what a special player he is. I would be very disappointed to see him delisted. I think he has two good seasons left in him.

Tom is the main man, i believe Sam can do what Paddy did and Hamling would be asked to do doen there

The fwd line is stacked with Buller as well, id rather not keep him to play fwd

I agree he may have two good seasons left in him, but I fear it may take 4 years or him to produce those two good seasons.

Didn’t he start as a defender?

I don't recall him doing so but my memory might be faulty. I do recall him making his AFL debut right at the end of his first year with the club. Against Brisbane - I think at the GABBA but not sure. I do seem to recall him playing a forward and kicking his first goal towards the end of that game.

His brother certainly started AFL life as a defender, and made the AA team one year as a defender. Later on he switched forward and then flipped between defence and attack.

I vaguely recall a discussion or two, after he made his debut, about who was the more promising KPF prospect: him or Jesse White.

IMHO alot will depend on fitness
Reid, if fit, is the best forward on our list.
He's a mark clunker, and straight shooter. Wasted down back.

All we really need to get done now is the Grundy deal, and we hold all the aces because too many bridges have been burnt at Melbourne.
We won't live or die on the Adams trade, so if it happens it happens.

Oddest trade so far is Goldstein to Essendon. He must have only a year or two left in him. I didn't realise the Don's were in the premiership window..lol.

Sorry did you really describe Sammy as a straight shooter? He’s such a confidence kicker. Only needs to miss the first couple and he’s quite capable of spraying them from Tom Hickey range.

According to Mitch Cleary on Fox Footy, Melbourne has rejected our offer of pick 46 for Grundy, as they want a pick in the 20's (our 25) for him. I consider both offers unders (46) and overs (25) respectively for Grundy (especially considering Melbourne got him for pick 27 from Pies).

I suspect a compromise picks swap resulting in a net worth pick value in the 30's will get it done. Especially considering Melbourne allowed Harmes go to the the Dogs for a future pick 3. Both Grundy & Harmes were out of favour contracted players. As some have posted, Grundy trade may hinge on what we receive for Stephens from North, which should be a late 2nd rounder in net worth.

I would've been happy if we got Harmes for a future 3rd rounder if Adams wasn't an option.

Hoping we can still retain our first 2 picks (12 & 25), so we can bundle them both to possibly upgrade to a top 10 pick and have chance to draft KPD Connor O'Sullivan. Getting Grundy, Adams, Jordan, Hamling, O'Sullivan & Cleary is my dream net haul from the trade/draft periods.

He did start as a defender in the reserves, but was switched forward pretty early on. He has never played as a defender for any length of time in the seniors.

To be honest we have to make these 4 deals plus keep our 12, 25, 46 this season if we want to truly have a go at the top4 while achieving well at the draft…..we can always do a late swap for a future 3rd rounder if we need to burn pick 46 but keep some value for next year.

                            We currently have picks 12, 25, 33, 46 and 54

If we can’t make it happen it is not the end of the world…….but it would be a real mistake not to go hard in 2024 / 2025 in our window

I’m loving the chess match and maybe what future picks will be involved to break the dead locks

Ps the comments to go early with one of Adams and or Grundy might not be the smartest move if both parties are a long way apart and we would need to compromise

We know both Melb and Pies can do a lot with the extra dollars they would save from moving these guys on. If there are players they want but equally those players want to move to Victoria then they may start looking elsewhere and of the clubs may tell them time is running out as we need to act

The Pressure back on the Pies and Dees to improve their lists is still real

I agree with this. Sam was largely responsible for us making the GF in 2022. He was sorely missed this year
