A fit Sam Reid would be a huge asset. Is easily our best forward/ruck still. Would also enable McLean to play purely as a forward.

Seven Swans earn Allies representation
I wonder if we are weighing up beyond Cleary?
Ie is there one of the six players that made the Allies squad a possible drafted player rather than a different way to our list?"be tough, only when it gets tough"

I think the club has made it clear that, beyond taking the earliest pick to the draft, "achieving well at the draft" is not a priority this year.Comment

I think the club has said Sam will need to wait until after the draft and trade period for his future to be settled.
For all the talk of him as a defender, he's never actually played there at length. He's done a bit of in-game pinch hitting, often late in quarters, as a loose, but playing permanently down there is another story.
I was listening to an interview Phil Davis (who's very good at analysis, by the way) did reviewing some of the key defenders floating around the trade period, and he was talking about Esava Rategolea. He made the point Esava has some athletic traits, but was largely covered in a back six full of experience and high footy IQ, and excellent defenders when at Geelong. But he said when he watched some behind goals vision, his actual one-on-one defensive craft - the minor triggers on how to hold and use your body, when to fall off and when to close in, even the timing of his spoils - it was subpar due to a lack of experience. Davis' point was he might get there, but there was a massive difference between floating around Geelong's defence with blokes like Tom Stewart covering your small mistakes, and being the main lockdown defender at Port.
I suspect if he played Sam permanently in defence, he'd face the same issue. He's really forward or not at this late stage of his career and as much as I love him and he was very good in '22, I'd rather keep getting games into the alternatives more likely to play in our next flag side.'Delicious' is a fun word to sayComment

From memory we have to use two picks at the draft?
That sounds like all we have space for? Only two via the draft?
Only reason I left in 46 was that Cleary sounds like he is having similar stats and impact as Gulden in the Allies game and wondered if he might actually get drafted? Ie use pick 46 if required but it sounds like we only have space for two spots anyway?"be tough, only when it gets tough"

If Reid is not offered another contract, that opens up another spot.Comment

McCartin spent a year playing in defence in our VFL team before he was added to the senior list.
As I’ve already observed, I have no doubt Reid could have been a defender. But there’s little long term benefit trying to retrain him now. We will go into next season with Tom as our number one tall, Melican and Hamling fighting it out to be the main second tall, Rampe still playing taller than his inches, plus Francis, Arnold and Edwards, and possibly a draftee.
If Reid is retained I imagine it will be as cover (and an experienced head) for our three young talls. Alongside Buller. If the club has/d confidence in Ladhams’s body and temperament, I imagine they’d set Sam free.Comment

I cannot see why North want Dylan Stephens. They already have a scary midfield with Sheezel and Wardlaw joining Simpkin, LDU, Thomas and Phillips and are likely to get either Harley Reid or two out of McKercher, Duursma or Ryley Sanders in the draft. Where does Dylan fit in whereas he would be an ideal fit for West Coast. Lucky that North are garbage every where else except for Larkey.Comment

Lol at North. According to the AFL site, they are trying to persuade West Coast to part with pick one by offering up all their late first round picks - this year’s and next. All while sitting on picks 2 and 3. I can’t see WC thinking about any offer from North for pick one that doesn’t involve pick two going back to them.Comment

FORMER No.5 draft pick Dylan Stephens has joined North Melbourne in a trade with Sydney.
The Swans have parted with Stephens and pick 25 and received North's end of first-round pick next year plus its pick 44 this year.
