I like his highlights. Has good height, Intercepts and gets on his own and makes space. Plus he looks to be a very good kick. Maybe we gazumped Brisbane on this one who may have been looking to Rookie him.

We gave up our pick 59 & our 2024 R4 to Hawthorn to move up 6 spots. Noticed other clubs just did straight swaps with their 2023 & 2024 R4 picks respectively to move up. We were the only ones in R4 to give additional pick to move up.

                Clever move
Hawks had a father son just behind what they gave us
pick 56 they jumped in with Calsher Dear 195cm tall
made it possible for Snell at 53

When interviewed by Twomey and Beveridge recently, Beatson was asked about our interest in Leake and Rogers. KB said we liked only one; we then bid on Rogers.

We must have seen something in Leake that put us off. I heard Twomey imply that Leake isn't quick.

We see Snell as a key defender; Mark McVeigh endorsed him: AFL Draft: Pick 53, Patrick Snell.

Now to the Rookie Draft to add Reid and one best available draft prospect. Will all be over by 4pm tomorrow and preseason training starts next week. Woopee

Agree. He looks like a classic CHB. Hope he can make the jump up to AFL level in time. KPD build.

I've been rehashing that, and other talking points, for years. Nothing gets through.

I think fans from the football states underestimate (or ignore) the role that the school system has on starting to develop footy skills and nous. Particularly at the private schools that dole out footy scholarships, there is more often than not an ex-AFL player on the staff as footy coach. And often very good ex-AFL players. Most of the equivalent schools in Sydney don't even offer AFL as an option, and those that do don't apply any resources to it.

So this idea that only players who wouldn't otherwise have chosen AFL should be eligible for the academies is silly. Without access to quality coaching and regular competition against similarly talented and motivated players throughout their development years, these players won't get close to AFL level living in Sydney. And that goes for Nick Blakey as much as for any of our other graduates.

I think the discounting system has to be adjusted.

Look what Collingwood paid for Daicos. There is merit in having to use a close draft pick to match, or pay more if you don’t have a near pick.

Eg the 20% discount applies for each pick within 12? of the final pick, 13 to 24 gets 10% discount and 25+ gets no discount.

Means clubs can’t just use a few “junk” picks in the late 20s and 30s to grab a top 5. They will need at least more picks or one first rounder.

I think the best solution to the junk pick approach is to require the first pick to be within, say, ten picks of where the player is bid. That would mean that clubs that finish towards the very top of the table (eg Bulldogs and Ugle-H: us and Mills; Brisbane and Ashcroft) would need to pay a bit of a premium to trade up for a pick around about pick 10-12 to match.

We would suffer under such a change - we probably would only have two of Logan, Braedon and Errol, for example - but I think it would shift things enough to make the system a little more balanced.

Gold Coast would have been able to take Walter easily enough this year, but they would probably then have to have chosen one or two of the others unless the hey brought forward picks from next year. They have another couple ok the pipeline for next year, so there would have been a real choice to make.
