Regardless of the kerfuffle, it seems quite a rare scenario for this level of impact to occur. I see no reason to change the rules, and would be very surprised if they did.

Clean up the review process a little, communicate any changes to that process clearly (Dawson himself flagged that all season commentators lament when Goal Umpires don't back themselves) and work on the technology a bit and ensure it's consistent across all grounds used for regular season/finals games.

I think I have a similar issue to Ludwig re the hoo haa.

So on 360 last night, Whateley was commending the NHL's rule of every decision in the last two minutes being reviewed. Really? So a bad decision that costs a team a goal three minutes out is ok, but not one at 90 seconds. And then there is the distinction between a mistake by a goal umpire and field umpire. Why?

Did anyone see the footage on X of the camera behind the Goals?? It looks like the goal umpire got it right! Yes it didn't hit the padding, but it did hit the post half way up. There is a clear deviation. What a difference a different camera angle makes.

Just watched Gerard Whateley carry on about the non goal decision and I thought his head was going to explode. Yes it was a mistake get over it. It got me wondering has John Longmire been on the ‘coaches night’ this year?

Seriously, Whatley's become a bit of a Vic-twat since he left the ABC and went to Fox.

He's been on Fox for as long as I can remember - since the relaunch of Fox Footy, I think. His recent change was to leave the ABC and go to SEN for his morning show.

I suspect he's always been a bit of a Vic-twat, and particularly a Geelong-twat. One of the things I loved about (and was amazed with) the much loved, late Clinton Grybas is that there was no way you could tell his private allegiance to Collingwood by watching his public media work. You had to be told that was who he supported. Anthony Hudson is widely known to be a Geelong supporter, and occasionally he lets himself be quizzed about the Cats as a fan, or even teased about it, but when he goes into "professional mode" it's hard to tell.

Whately doesn't even try to hide it. Whenever Dangerfield is on AFL360 you can see Whately's eyes dew over and hear a certain coyness in his voice.

I really miss Clinton. The ultimate professional - I didn't know he supported the Pies. I think it's Hudson saying "no no no" at the end of the Nick Davis spectacular but that is one of the few times his professionalism has slipped. Whateley tries for gravitas but frequently fails.

To be a bit fair to Whateley, most of the Melbourne media wet their pants in the presence of Dangerfield. It's deeply weird, and it's usually the male journalists that are the worst offenders. I mean, he's a good player, but he's not Leigh Matthews Mark 2 so I honestly don't understand the fetish they have. I bet they go home after interviewing him and ask their wives to sleep on the couch.

As for Huddo, he's great. Watching the Buddy highlights, his ability to read the cues for what was coming and go with the right call was a reminder of how good he is. And his call on Nick Davis in the 2005 final vs the Cats is beyond brilliant, particularly given his attachments.
