But so do the recruiting and coaching staff of the other clubs who we have traded with, surely?

A small correction, Dempster was a third round pick. Pick 39 I believe, same draft that we got McVeigh with pick 5 and traded pick 21 for Davis and got C. Bolton via pre-season draft. A very sucessful mix of players there.

One thing about our drafting is that we got a very good mix of players, very balance group. It has everything inside, outside, hard, skilful, tall, short, etc... (except a decent KP probably). It is very unlike some other clubs who seem to draft so many players of the same kind.

Ah, but not all clubs are created equal. (or coaches and coaching staff, need i remind of a certain G Buccanarra)

What did St Kilda use to first recruit Barry Hall. I bet it wasnt below 13. So by trading for him, we paid way over what we could have paid had we recruited him first.

Also, our trading policy of not using early picks, is NOT what won us a flag.
What won us a flag is that most of our backline was built completely outside the draft:

FB: Dempster (F/S), Barry (Zone), Matthews (zone)
HB: Bolton (PSD), LRT (Zone), Kennelly (O/S)

            Pick 19 IIRC.

I'd say that our picks in the 50's will be used to re-draft delisted players from our own Club.

                Worst trading... ever.

                Have I got this right...

                IN:
                Chambers
                Richards
                Pick 52
                Pick 55
                Pick 61

                OUT:
                Saddington
                Powell
                Pick 19
                Pick 35
                Pick 51

I don't think draft picks really matter after the top 20, but still that's pretty bad. Right?

It's a pass. Only because we've recruited young players that will play roles that we needed to fill (ie, a ruckman and a quick key defender).

We've fouled up the draft picks, but we'll get away with that because we weren't interested in the draft anyway.
                  We hate Anthony Rocca
                  We hate Shannon Grant too
                  We hate scumbag Gaspar

In that basis, weve effectively traded Powell, Saddo, and 19 for Richards and Chambers. i reckon thats not such a bad deal.

Got done over by other clubs who knew Saddo and Powell wanted to leave. It will be interesting to see what kind of players we chase in the rookie draft.

well if picks after 20 don't matter then all we have lost is 2 reserve graders with little future and pick 19.
gained 2 promising types for positions where we needed them.

my calculations are 5 retirees,2 drafted away,2 drafted in plus 3 mandatory national draft selections leaves 2 spaces to be filled from our exciting rookie list.

i hope vogel and campbell get the call, but worry where that leaves potter, because i think he is a talent.

I don't think it's completely terrible, at least in context.

Amazingly we still have 21 of the premiership team.

Others knocking on the door include Doyle (who will take Ball's spot, on the assumption that he stays uninjured), McVeigh, Vogels, Spriggs, Malceski, Moore.

Quite frankly, we didn't have much to trade away. Saddo and Powell maybe, but the old adage "you get what you pay for" rings true when it comes to trading players, more often than not.

Pick 19 for Richards and 35 for Chambers might be just a tad expensive, but not horribly so. Basically what we've done is given up 2 early lottery tickets in exchange for AFL-ready 22/23 year olds. They, along with the players I mention above, will make up the bulk of the flag defence team. Maybe a couple of the younger kids might improve enough to get close to senior selection, guys like Willoughby, Schmidt etc.

What did we want? A ruckman and another tall KP player? Well, we got them. It's not exactly Everitt & Riewoldt, but we weren't a chance of trading for players like that anyway.

It's a shame we dont' get any draft picks until #50+, but hey.. just means the recruiting staff have to be THAT much smarter than the others on the day

177th Senior AFL Match - Round 4, 2009 - Sydney vs Carlton, SCG. This is obviously out of date. I suppose I'll update it once I could be bothered sitting down with the fixture and working it out....

That's really looking on the bright side. Our fringe players are termed reserve graders yet other teams fringe players are supposedly promising types.

From the rookie list, Vogels is the certainty to be promoted and I feel Grundy may get the other spot. I agree with you about Potter though, I think he deserves a chance, he's a tough nut whose kind of game suits our style of play.

Only time will tell on how we went this trade week, but i am happy enough we got 2 promising players who could do well at a change of club (especially Super Ted).

Agreed. Chambers and Richards could be very good acquisitions. Its our draft pick numbers that dont look so great.
