    So he was contracted?

        According to club sites:
        Doyle 203cm 105kg
        Ball 200cm 104kg
        Jolly 200cm 100kg
        Chambers 197cm 99kg
        Goodes 193cm 97kg

He won't be the biggest ruckman going around, but get him on a good diet and he'll be pretty close to Ball size.

Yep, had another year left. Should have done what Hawthorn did with Everitt. Told him that he was a contracted player and unless another club can come up with a suitable trade, he would have to play out the contract.

Although do you really want a player who doesn't WANT to hang around?

177th Senior AFL Match - Round 4, 2009 - Sydney vs Carlton, SCG. This is obviously out of date. I suppose I'll update it once I could be bothered sitting down with the fixture and working it out....

The player also has to be 30.

                b) The price we got for Saddo. A late second round or early third round pick is the minimum that I think he is worth. I know he has come in for a lot of bashing on here but he is a decent AFL player. I think that the club's "soft heart" came to the fore here, worrying more about Saddo than about itself.
                Liz,

Think of all our dealings as insurance. Ideally, Doyle will be our number 1 ruckman with Jolly as the back up. If Doyle doesn't make it then we have Chambers and next season isn't a complete loss. (And Spida is available at the end of next year . . . when we will have shown Chamber's true worth.)

Price for Saddo - in a mediocre draft everyone after 10 (or certain by the late teens) is a complete crap shoot. So we haven't given anything up really. If we could reasonably expect a top15 pick for Saddo then we would have been screwed with this deal. But with his injuries and lack of seniors time that was never likely.

Overall, next year we have a team where all but one of the Premiership team is still playing. We don't face the ruck disaster we did a week ago and we have a new KPP who could develop well (and one who has). We have a lot of young players who now have premiership medals and a lot of belief in themselves and the team. And we have some good talent just about to come good in the 2s. Right now it's all looking bloody good - as long as we can sober up the guys in Hawaii in time for R1 2006.

Because they also have to 30 at the start of that season.

Actually - Bo, can you dig out one of the four 'Laws of the Game' books you have, and check whether its 30 at the start of the season, or 30 at January 1? If its the latter, Mick will have to wait until 2008.

                  Midaro - yes.

As has been said elsewhere, we don't necessarily have to de-list anyone, and most likely not more than one senior list player.

As with any year, there will be plenty of potentially useful types floating around in the 50s, as well as a majority of kids who look potentially useful but aren't going to make it for a variety of reasons. Let's hope that we can continue our fairly good form of sorting out wheat from chaff!

I've never read Moneyball (gasp), but the thing that puts us way ahead of the game compared with a team whose only mantra was 'forget the draft, just trade in mature borderline talent' is that we have a young list. And, as others have noted, it's a bower bird list, i.e. it's from a wide variety of sources; we haven't put all of our recruiting/development eggs in one basket.

Even with our elite group creeping up into the late 20s (as most clubs' elite group is), I suspect that our volume of retirements (coupled with no-one older than 23 getting added to the list) means that we have an even younger list in 2006 than we had in 2005.

So it looks like Matthew Lappin, Scott Camporeale and Shane Woewodin will be in the draft next month.
I wouldn't mind getting Matthew Lappin with one of our late picks but the other 2 are well past it now.

I agree with that. I also wish Saddo and Powelly well in the future. It is just a pity that Saddo did the knee and with another preseason may be back to what he was before. I know his family will be happy to have him back inMelb...even if it is playing for Carlton. We all have to pay a price somtimes.

                            No we got pick 52.

After the list has been around the clubs twice (say pick 35) then the skill of our scouts counts for a lot more than their position on the list.

And being realistic, can anyone see Saddo getting lots of game time in the Swans seniors in 2006? We drop someone to bring Vogels in and we need to play some of the kids. So Saddo gets disillusioned in the 2s as Schaubs did with him this year (and don't think watching the others get the premiership didn't hurt them). The only reason to keep him was so another team didn't get him - that's great for his and the team's morale.

Like Geelong and the Bombers have said about our two new Swans - "he's a good guy and tries hard but doesn't fit our current requirements".

Well, that just makes our trading that much worse than I thought it was. He would have turned around quickly enough if we had kept him.

Who cares? He's no good. I'm just happy he's gone. Probably a bit harsh but I don't think he was worth much. I wish him the best of luck at Carlton.
