Not sure I agree with that. Smart teams do give up their first round picks to get a genuine quality player who wants to move and fits in with their team needs.

Imagine the current Swans line-up without Barry Hall, Jason Ball and Paul Williams, all players for whom the Swans traded a latish first round pick (+ more).

I know the obvious retort is that they haven't delivered a premiership yet, and until the Swans win one there will always be debate on whether this was the right strategy. But at least they have made a significant contribution towards making the Swans very competitive last year (and to some extent this year).

The presence of Hall alone, as a genuine top 10 player in the comp (on current form) lifts Sydney to the edge of being a serious contender. The midfield could lift to a stratospheric level but without a player of Hall's ilk it would all be to no avail - see WC and Adelaide as teams with superb midfields but who struggle for a tall, consistent target up forward.

Time may run out on Williams and Ball, but if nothing else they will have allowed our future guns to develop in a team with a more of a winning habit than a losing one.

Which team do you support? When you say "we", you can't mean the Swans. Every time Sydney has traded an early draft pick they have come out ahead.

And name one "smart" team that has refused to trade early draft picks . . . !

Do you actually know anything about the Swans? or do you just think it's cute to come on this board and make ridiculous statements?

Willo and O'Keefe are two good examples of players in the squad that would have a lot of value at the end of the season and we could reasonable replace with others already in the team. But I suppose you think we can trade Warfe for a top line KPP then?

Too right. Everyone wants a gun midfielder and key defender but does not want to trade and draft picks or established players.

Willo has absolutely zero trade value. Would not get a 3rd round pick for him. Can you imagine the outcry if Hawthorn traded ANYTHING for a 1-2 year prospect. It is absolutely impossible.

Trading is the same for every team every year, except for very rare circumstances.

1) The only players that other clubs want from our list are our REQUIRED playes

2) The only players we want from anyone else's list are their REQUIRED players

3) All supporters envisage that they will get a first round draft pick for some player they have been bagging all year - or who has one season left as a top player.

Basically speaking you can never get a young player who is in someone's best 18 (like O'Keefe for us or Miller for Melbourne)

EXCEPTIONS - we want one of these!

1) Quality player wants to go home and forces a trade.

2) Quality player wants to join his brother and forces trade.

3) Team has 4 or 5 Quality Players competing for 2 spots. (Knobel, French, Brooks)

4) Unsettled troublesome Unfulfilled Talent needs new environment. (Hall, Everitt, Lockett)

5) Crap coaching staff have no idea how talented their player is (McPhee, Michael)

6) Star player at crap team heads for the big Bucks (pun intended)

So your task, ladies and gentlemen is to spot a Quality young KPP or midfielder currently on the fringes of another team because they are unhappy or in a long queue behind more experienced talents.

For example other supporters looking at our stocks might look at Buchanan/Ablett as being good players who may be at the wrong end of a queue.

Actually, Ablett (I read today) is a Hawthorn rather than Geelong boy....so maybe Ablett + pick for Hay.

I was also thinking about Mark McVeigh and I have to say I can't see why we would pick him up at all even in the pre season draft(even though he's not bad). He wouldn't get a game as a back pocket here (Bevan, Crouch, Mathews, Bolton) or as a midfielder and certainly not as a small forward.

Geelong have several talls getting a run ahead of Playfair

Ottens needs a new start. Richmond need, well, an Ottens type

Walsh from the Bulldogs is going to be pushing Hargrave and Hahn and Harris (they also have Minson). Their problem is a tall goal kicker.

Bradshaw is 5th in line for Brisbane (not even counting the rucks).

You are not wrong. Good players rarely leave clubs as a rule of thumb (unless you are a Bombers Mercenary). Wanganeen and Woewoeful are the only the Brownlow medalists from the last 15 years who changed clubs afterwards

There may be a total of 2 or 3 gun trades each year. Of course some trades result in gun players down the track.

But how many real class players have moved in recent seasons. Off the top of my head I think Nathan Brown, Nick Stevens, Barry Hall, Aaron Hammill, Gehrig.

I was refering to precieved guns at the time. A lot of these are useful players that have benefited from the move.

Realistically we dont have a high profile as other clubs and we have been traditionally positioning our trading appeal on the "invisibility" factor. Of course, "coming home" factor works for all clubs.

In the next trading period, if we are targetting a high profile player, it would be either one from NSW or one wanting away from the spotlight.

So the natural question is which players would benefit from the move away from the spotlight??? Any thoughts??? I have always had a soft spot for Travis Johnson, believing his game would improve with a move away from Melbourne. A heavy expectation might sometimes be too big a burden to bear and this is a common theme for most low draft picks in a heavily scrutinized environment.

The point is:

Willo has no trade value, no other club would even consider him

O'Keefe is one of our brightest hopes, why trade him when he is about to peak?

I think there are plenty of players we could trade:

Saddington
Fosdike
Mathews

I would have Willo and ROK ahead of any of these.

There seems to be a market this year for a defensive small mdfielder/backman. We have abundance of those. Should be able to get some values for one. The question is who would we want to trade away?? Crouch? Mathews? Bevan? Fixter?
