I think Ottens or Thompson would be worth it at the right price, however i think both clubs would be asking too much

Thompson would come cheaper given his age, performance, issues etc.

Heneman - No

Bradshaw - Yes but he ain't going anywhere

Hall - Yes but only at low cost as he is not the long term answer to our problems

Staker - Yes - not a true key position player and unlikely to be let go by West Coast

Playfair - Would be my biggest target - mobile key position player not getting a go at the cats and wouldn't cost too much, contracted for another season unfortunately

A midfielder I wouldn't mind seeing us target is Damien Adkins at West Coast. Young player with potentially enormous talent, traded by Collingwood a couple of years ago.

Except that he's not done much at WC either. Pies fans don't seem too disappointed with the trade that they did for him - which given that they got the frequently lambasted Williams doesn't say much for Adkins since he moved.

Young players often get a wake-up call when they are traded to a new club at a fairly young age but if he's not done it at his second, what's to say he'd do it at a third?

Or have there been major injury concerns that I'm not aware of?

Osteitis pubis, a groin injury and an ankle injury.

He's looked good in limited time at WC and he was good in his first year at Collingwood before injuries (2000).

Also, he's only played 39 games - we give our guys more time than that to come good.

Fair enough, though if he does have the promise you believe, I'd have thought WC would want to keep him. I reckon that, while their topline of midfielders is probably second to none, it falls away pretty quickly. They'd be looking for a couple of their younger ones to come through fairly rapidly to lend support to their senior group.

Although Sydney could do with an outstanding young midfielder (which I suspect you can only get via the draft, not by trade), especially with Williams and Maxfield likely to retire within the next two or three years, we've got a decent crop developing, both of small nuggetty types and tall flankers. It's true key position players and a ruckman that we probably need if we're looking to trade for an experienced player.

That would be the main problem - I would expect WCE want to keep him. But that's often the case with good players.

Maybe he'd be keen to head back east in a couple of years - Sydney is a lot closer to home than Perth!!

Correct me if i'm wrong NMW as i haven't seen much of him at the Weagles, but isn't he a similar type to fosdike and mcveigh - skinny fast outside midfielder??

He's not big and he's still slight, but he's very quick, has a great kick and seems to know what to do with the ball. I think our midfield could do with a dasher like that.

Surely our midfield / backline is filled with "dashers" already?

If we're looking for another midfielder then surely either a stoppage ball winner or a strong bodied bullocker is what we should be after.

I'm sure someone will enlighten me on who I've missed. But overall that looks like a decent success rate to me.

I'd throw Craig O'Brien into the "good" list and Rouvray into the "bad", for starters.

96 was a quite bad year for trades and drafting. We lost Rocca for O'Farrell, Sangster, Wilson and Orchard, and Orchard is the only one who gave anything back. We also got picks 4 and 27 for Heuskes, and picked up Kinnear and Cook.

With three first-round draft picks, we got Warfe, Kinnear and O'Farrell (maybe 10 games between the latter two) in a draft which included Nathan Brown, Max Hudghton, Alistair Nicholson, Josh Wooden, Tim Notting, Jason Johnson, Jess Sinclair, Jonathan Hay, Martin Pike, Brett Montgomery, Michael Braun, Cameron Mooney, Trent Cummings, Byron Pickett, Russell Robertson, Chad Rintoul and Anthony Franchina. We'd be in a better situation if we'd picked up one of those.

Sure we could do with a ball winner, but pacey midfielders who can run and kick long are always useful.

Williams is nearing the end of his career, as is Maxfield.

Kennelly should definitely be able to do that once he gets released into the midfield.

Schneider probably too, although I think he will also be able to go in and get the ball.

Who else?

Crouch is a dasher - sometimes forgotten because he is also good defensively.

Fixter and Bevan both have the ability to move rotate between the back (or even forward) pockets and the midfield. Both are pretty quick.

Buchanan has shown a bit of pace in his recent spurt of form.

Even Ablett has started to show some speed as well (and he was described as pacy when drafted, though admittedly he's kept it well hidden until a couple of weeks ago).

McVeigh has definitely got some speed.

So too Willoughby who, if he can add some bulk over the off-season, I suspect we'll see in the senior team next year.

Matthew Davis is also pretty quick and I suspect he will become another player in the Kennelly mould. He's got a bit of developing yet to do but is showing a bit of class in the twos at the moment.

All of these have decent kicking skills to go with their foot speed. Apart from Ablett, they maybe don't quite have the penetration of Maxfield, Williams or Schneider - but all are capable of delivering long to the chest of Baz.
