Disagree that Mathews is valueless. When Williams was traded to Sydney, IIRC Collingwood was asking for Mathews to go the other way.

Mathews would certainly attract interest if he is made available to the meat market.

I think Mathews should be made a full time back pocket ala Chris Johnson next year with alot more players being added to the midfield.

Thanks for posting this midaro - excellent work! Though I to would disagree with your assessment of Mathews. Clearly no champion but not a dud either as 5 consecutive top 10 finishes in the B&F indicate. Would of course be tradeable, I think his application and persistance could be very valuable at some clubs with very weak midfields (are you listening Richmond?).

Maybe. But there's a lot of ground between 'possible' and 'probable'. IMO the breakdown is like this...

Legitimate Trade Currency
Ryan O'Keefe
Nic Fosdike
Jason Saddington (if the knee can be overlooked)
Jude Bolton

Under Exceptional Conditions
Adam Goodes (only if he really won't play ruck again)
Michael O'Loughlin (absolutely not if O'Keefe is traded)

My best case realistic trade for this year would be:
OUT: O'Keefe + Fosdike
IN: M McVeigh + Hayes (Not sure of contract status)

Maybe with draft picks to even things out.

Just a shame about your comments about Ben Mathews, you lost me after that. With that one comment about him being delisted iby 2006 you have managed to undo all your good work.

Mathews is no champion, but he is and will always be an integral part of any team structure. One of our few out and out ball winners.

I really can't believe that no-one at all agrees with me about Mathews. Around here, usually any position - no matter how outlandish - can find at least a single ally Oh well.

To be honest I am surprised by his possession numbers: they are far higher and more consistent than I assumed (not that that's everything).

I guess he's a player I've just overlooked.

There would be very few players I would trade O'Keefe for and McVeigh and Hayes aren't on that list. If we want McVeigh all it will take is a 2nd or 3rd Round Pick and with Hayes, St Kilda won't trade their captain no matter how good the offer is. Anyway he is still under contract and has said he wants to stay in Melbourne.

On trading O'Keefe, its one thing to say he is easily replaceable, its another thing to find that replacement. Tell who else in our team is capable of doing what O'Keefe has done since the middle of last season? You can hardly match him up, plays well above his height and is deadly in front of goal. I would say O'Loughlin, but then again he is unable to play up the ground like O'Keefe can.

With Magic on his last legs and no real options playing in Canberra to replace him, why trade O'Keefe???? Our trade bait this season will be Ablett, Fosdike and Saddington. Thats all and in all likelyhood at least two of them will still be on our list next season. Keep dreaming of the Swans trading for a superstar, because there won't be one this year capable of filling the needs we have and want to fill.

O'Keefe has been excellent this year. I can't believe that so many of you appear to regard him as trade bait. Why dismantle such a superb forward line that is now beginning to really click.

No you have one here. I only disgree with you on his value. He could very well be traded for a talented but less tough midfielder in a team that has many weak midfielders. Adelaide and Freo seem to have a few like that, so who knows? Especially if they are trying to free up some salary cap room. Unlikely though.

I think our best options really remain in the draft. Picking young smokees like Bevan and Schneider may be the only way we can capture a classy young midfielder. For experience we will have to rely on another Williams (grossly undervalued by Collingwood IMO).

We are much better placed to pick up a younger KPP, at the moment, and the best trade options are:

Macelski
McGlone
Sundqvist
Matthews
Saddo
Thewlis
James

IMHO ben has been one of the unsung heros this year. A quiet acheiver.

He regularly manages to get his hands on the ball(as the stats prove). He just doesn't always use it as well as he should.
