Not a bad start for Jolly-Fish at all. Very impressed with his fitness and work ethic. Seems willing to play all over the ground, and not afraid to have a shot for goal if it's there. Hopefully it continues in that manner for a long time!

There was a bit of over-possession, but I suppose it wasn't too bad for the first game of the year.

    One down, 24 to go.

177th Senior AFL Match - Round 4, 2009 - Sydney vs Carlton, SCG. This is obviously out of date. I suppose I'll update it once I could be bothered sitting down with the fixture and working it out....

Were you watching the game against the Hawks today, or a video of Rd 15 last year of the Reserves v Ainslie or something. Stats don't always tell a lot but he had 3 possessions and gave away 2 free kicks today. If that is a very good three quaters you can paint me black and call me NobNob. Heath James, where are you?

No I actually watched the whole game. And noticed that Holland had very little impact. Because of LRT. Like you said... stats dont mean a lot, and he did just fine.

The good - all of 'em.
Praise for Jude Bolton - I don't recall him turning it over, worked hard, ran on from contests and kicked a goal. Did what he needs to do week in week out to go to the next level as a midfielder. I for one have been a Jude knocker, but lets hope he is learning. Played pretty well I thought.

Goodesy had a few clangers (too cute) but great to see him back in form and sound of body.

            Williams an absolute pro.

            The not so good

When we got out to about 7 goals ahead for what ever reason they started to over possess - call it lairising, cute footy, arrogance or just plain dumb. This is what we did last year. Do it against top sides at our peril. Should have won by 15 goals.

Just what was Buchanan doing when he chipped it out on the full from inside 50. Must improve his disposal to cement his spot in top 22, regardless of his hardness.

Stewie Maxfield for goodness sake hold easy marks and start hitting someone on the chest or at leat put it to a genuine contest. Exasperating.

Bevan - hard at it but why take on an opponent (twice) when you have had ample time to kick or handball to a free team mate. Selfish methinks. Interstingly after his second such misdemeanor Roos moved him forward.

Schneider - could be called a "sheep dog" today. Around the packs, just nipping at the heels but rarely in amongst it. Number 21 or 22 in squad at the moment.

              * I thought B1, B2, Bevan, Jolly, Barry, and williams had a terrific game.
              * I wonder why nearly all Barry's great marks looked so awkward.
              * Liz, was right everything Monty touched turned to stone, but he was throwing a bit of weight around. I also noticed at centre bounces, 3 times he ran from the edge of the square from the forward line, and impeded a player running towards goal, who should've taken possession.
              * Bevans goal off the ground was great.
              * Williams saved goal was fantastic.
              * McVeighs was hilarious, even he thought so.
              * seeing 3 big men out there was great.
              * When Ball pushed Holland into the point post, it shoulda been a free to Holland, or OOB, not a throw in.
              * Ball also bumped a hawk pretty hard when he fed Davis his 4th goal.
              * LRT looked like he didn't know where the footy was.

Good win, but a big improvement is needed for next week.

What are you talking about Schneiderman, Holland had like 10 marks and a couple of goals. Easily the Hawks best forward.

I haven't got to responses, so may be saying what has already been said.

Doyle came off with his knee on ice (my husband says this is always the case, and looking at the replay, he went in with it strapped).

He also came off with bandaging around his foot and no shoe.

Imagine if he could kick goals from further than 30 metres! He might be able to, guess we'll never know.
I knew him as a gentle young man, I cannot say for sure the reasons for his decline
We watched him fade before our very eyes, and years before his time

Very, and some of his tackling, was good and some was just plain stupid.

Yeh, he had Maxfield running beside him.

Barry Hall was also knocked out in the 3rd. He said he had no memory of the game.

Or was he just sick of talking about it at the after match and keen to get home?

On the TV Doyle's looked like an ankle.

Close up showed him with the boot off and trainer holding his foot, and Doyley pointing to his foot. Inocuous run in to take centre bounce. At least it didn't look like the knee.

                            Gee he is fragile.

It?s very difficult to draw much out of today?s game. That Hawthorn performance was one of the most insipid displays I have ever witnessed at VFL/AFL level; they are the SOFTEST side I?ve ever seen. Ainslie would probably have towelled up the Hawks today (and our Ressies bet Ainslie by 20 goals in the curtain raiser).

The four points and percentage are fantastic for us but really, Alistair Clarkson has more work in front of him than a Baghdad bricklayer.

Have a look at the Geelong/Richmond game. The Tiges kicked a few more goals, but they were woeful.
