This discussion reminds me of the time that 'Tubby' Taylor was captain of the Australian cricket side about eight years ago and was going through a bad patch with the bat, hardly making any runs. There was some discussion about whether he should be dropped. I said no, because his other contributions to the side was worth 50 runs each game, both as captain and as an excellent first slip.

A couple of months later he made 334 not out.

Steve Waugh went through a similar patch of bad form and worked through it.

One has to look at more than just the number of possessions a player has before passing judgement on their worth in a side. Was he soaking up a tagger and releasing the other midfielders? Was he leading onfield? Was he sacrificing his own game to the betterment of the team as a whole?

Everyone has bad games from time to time. If our captain has one below-average game, that's no reason to drop him. It's like dropping the captain of a cricket side that's won by 8 wickets because he made a duck. It's just stupid.

Willo showed all the signs of being back to the same form of 2001 2002. He has had a great career compared to maxfield and still has the same amount of pace and class that he always had.
              Eh?

You think he'll be running around in 2007? It's possible, but surely unlikely.

We are not talking about 2007. We are merely stating that you can't compare a player of willo's ilk to the likes of stuart maxfield.

                  you talking about williams?

i think he is a possibility to play a fair few more years, he is durable, doesnt lose much pace, can kick a goal and is pretty injury free.

All well and good. He'll be 34 in two years and two days. As I said, it's possible he'll be around, but how many 34 year olds do you count in the competition at the moment?

It's prudent to plan the team around Williams having two more years, and if he's still good enough after that, then it's a bonus.

334 runs is not the sort of score posted by anyone. That's the same score as Bradman's best in a test.

Changes to a side are less necessary if the side is winning. If we keep winning, it doesn't matter much if Maxfield has 6 touches or 36. Games are not won by individual possessions alone. If his on-field leadership contributes to the wins, then we run a huge risk if we choose to drop him. His on-field leadership could well be netting us an extra 30 touches a game, dispersed around the playing group as extra possessions, or as easy possessions denied to the opposition. Without knowing his exact contribution as an on-field leader, those who underrate his worth to the side do so recklessly.

I knew him as a gentle young man, I cannot say for sure the reasons for his decline
We watched him fade before our very eyes, and years before his time

I suspect it will.. he shouldn't have dropped that mark which directly led to the North goal by Sansbury.

Unfortunatly for Maxie he has been ordinary to start the season, and today worse.
Maybe a stint in the Reggis to get his confidence back, or time to give it away for the sake of the team???
