I said trade him 4 year s ago. No finishing ability is his problem. Under pressure it is kick it and hope. Bucky is a bit the same.
Ben Mathews HAS to go

His skills under pressure are a disgrace. He has no concept of playin on and moving the ball quickly. That was shown last night when he took a mark in the dieing minutes, moving it quickly was the obvious choice. He was in a lot of space. Yet he turned, played on and stuttered, he just cant move a footy quickly. His kick was again a shocker, and gave Hall no chance.
He has played footy for too long to not be able to play under pressure. He will crumble in the finals. You would expect this inability under pressure from someone like Moore or Malceski as they are still picking up the pace of the game, but from Mathews...
TRADE HIM!!! Mathews + Schneider + Doyle + First ROund Pick must get us something...- Impossible is just a big word thrown around by small men who find it easier to live in a world they've been given, than to explore the power they have to change it. Impossible is not a fact, it's an opinion. Impossible is not a declaration, it's a dare. Impossible is potential. Impossible is temporary. Impossible is nothing!Comment

Matthews struggles to hit targets when not under pressure as well by hand and by foot. And even when he handballs to a bloke in space, he makes the player work because the ball often bounces etc. You have to weight the ball in order for the bloke to keep running and the game to keep flowing.LIFE GOES ONComment

Until coming to Sydney (and becoming a Swans member) I thought Mathews was an honest toiler who made the most of his ability. Now having watched the Swans closer in recent years, I would have to agree that he is a liability to the side as he continually turns the ball over and leaves team mates stranded and out of position. Like with O'Bree at Collingwood who has similar attributes (ie wins the ball well but can't do anything with it), the team needs to adopt some rules regarding Mathews:
- never switch play to Mathews
- use him as a defensive tagger
- use him to clear stoppages
- never allow him to deliver to inside 50
He is not a lost cause because he is very determined and tough at the ball but he must learn to play within himself and the team must adapt accordingly.
Surely Roos must see this.
On a final note, did anyone else notice that of the 6 captains, Goodes was the only one to step up and show leadership when it was needed last night? He's the man for the job.

Good point re Goodes and leadership last night. (Baz being at the other end of the scale). And when he was captain, Goodes was the one who got the players together mid quarter when they were losing the plot and got them to regroup and win. He would have to be the pick right now.Comment

I am no Mathews fan and he was ordinary, but Willo was not much better. His disposal lately has been very poor. Again he did the dinky little nothing kick into 50 from 55 and some of his midfield turnovers when clear left me speechless.
This man can kick them from 55 so why doesn't he have a go. But no he has to go short to a super flooded forward line.Comment

Beats me why Nick Malceski wasn't played on Saturday night, even if it was in spurts....Malceski's 5-10 possies is worth much more than "Ball-up" Benny's 20 odd nowhere stats !!Well somebody told me, You had a boyfriend, Who looks like a girlfriend,That I had in February of last year, It's not confidential, I've got potential

His first instinct is to go backwards, his second instinct is to go sideways and it seems it's only if there is no Swans player behind him or he's having a set shot on goals that he'll consider going forwards.
He cost us serious momentum on a number of occasions on Sat - if this is obvious to many people on this board, why is not to Syd coaching staff? I recognise he brings something to the party in terms of the over-used "accountability" aspect but there has to be something else there as well.Comment

The guy doesn't seem to know how to read the flow of the game. In number of occasions, when we were fully charging ahead, he would kick sideway when the ball was in his hands.
He did willingly put his body in the line in the first quarter though. However as the game progressed he was back to his old shelf again.Comment
