Ben has a place in the team still, I'd like to see him playing more of a deep defence/back pocket/close checking kind of role.
I knew him as a gentle young man, I cannot say for sure the reasons for his decline
We watched him fade before our very eyes, and years before his time

So a role like Crouch played on Matera last week? Primary focus is to make sure opponent gets no ball, if he gets no possessions either, well, who cares?
I'm on the Chandwagon!!!
If you cannot compete for the premiership, it's better to be young and exciting than middle-aged and dowdy.

Opposition coaches love it when they see who Benny lines up on. They know that if there player gets beaten by Benny for the ball, Benny will turn it back over straight away anyway.
Our best plan is for Benny to try and drag his opponent as far away from the ball as possible. A nill all draw is a huge win for us.
Vicky Pollard: Oh my god I so can't believe you just said that this is like the time I threw Anita's nokia in the canal as a joke and she's like you have well got to buy me another one and I'm like get over it and then Paul came over who's adopted anyway and started saying that I fancy Mark Bennett but oh my god just because I have sex with someone doesn't mean I fancy them.
Originally posted by MagpieGreg Until coming to Sydney (and becoming a Swans member) I thought Mathews was an honest toiler who made the most of his ability.
I think there is still much merit in that assesment. Part of his problem is that the retiremens of Kelly, Schwass, Cresswell has seem him drafted into the midfield rotation, a part of the field which exposes his limitations more than any other.
It's very strange, when the games flowing his skills and decision making are a big worry. However I have noticed that when he gets a set shot at goal he's the opposite of Monty. I can't remember the last time he's duffed one. Which is weired because a set shot is often the epitome of preassure.
It doesn't alter the situation, I just thought it was odd, but perhaps it's not preassure but think-time that's the problem?
As to trading him, perhaps but would we get anything more than a 4th round choice?

Yep. I think Ben is a good small defender, his natural instincts appear to be more those of a defender.

Did the umpire blow the whistle when he almost had his head taken off running through the centre square? Was it "play on, advantage" or was it totally ignored?

You say that as if you know it for a fact. Which coach told you that? It'd be fascinating to know - and the context.

Carrying the drinks or cutting up the oranges shouldn't be too hard for him.

You're surely not looking for rational debate in this thread, DM?
Surely you know by now that as soon as Mathews or LRT are mentioned, any balanced discussion goes out the window
The wonderful thing is that, once a Swans player makes the RWO most-hated list, it virtually guarantees that that player will get an extended contract, or be made captain, or win a Brownlow medal . . . .

Who was that? Certainly not me - I just never thought he would be a good key position player. As I recall you were one of the people who loved to claim how wrong I was and he was going to be (or already was) a great KPP...
Captain Logic is not steering this tugboat.
