Here, here MM. I'm on the "Saddo must stay (even if it's just in the reserves)" bandwagon.

No, that's not what I meant. I think we need two good designated ruckman if we are going to succeed again next year. We know the story re Goodes and rucking. We know how injury prone Doyle is. We cant reasonably expect Jolly, who I think has been terrific, to carry most of the ruck work next year.Originally posted by Ruckman
describing Jolly (Doyle and Shaw and perhaps Goodes ~ yes I said it, Goodes) as a non-functioning ruck seems a tad hysterial.Occupational hazards:

I couldn't agree more - but I think injuries have really hampered him - especially in the last couple of years (I thought he played like 150 games from debut or something)Why, especially if he cant get a regular game in the A's and he wants to go?
Still think he has something to offer the senior side (especially if injury hits) - adds experienced depth to our list which after all the recent retirements could be handy.
I thought he was offered as trade bait last year but no one was interested - I dont see what would have changed from then. Its all about what he is willing to do - dont think we would delist him so PSD might be outComment

He has got through a season without hurting his knee again - no-one would have traded for him coming off a reconstruction.Originally posted by Magic Man

I quite like him but it's best that we trade him - for him and us. He'd actually get a game in most sides in the AFL - we just seem to have a lot of relatively tall flankers at the moment. Strange as it seems, the Eagles could have used him in their forward line because he can take a mark.Comment

Too true mate - I think he would get a game at just about any club in VIC at the moment - he is an exceptional mark (usually floating in from the side) - I guess we do have a bit of a luxury in that dept - Goodes, Seany and tiger are all essentially utilities.we just seem to have a lot of relatively tall flankers at the moment. Ok convinced if he wants to go and we can get something better than draft picks for him then maybe he should try his luck - I will be sad, always have fond memories of saddo
I think he should head north ather than south butComment

The second best defence in the league has more to do with our game plan than Leo. Champ that he is, he can't take the gorillas - Look at Gehrigs seven goals this year. He regularly gives away free kicks(Most in the league for free kicks against in f50) and is beaten every third week.Originally posted by Charlie
As for Leo, well, he has made AA twice in the past two years. I agree that he's suspect against the gorillas, but the sheer fact is that there isn't a whole lot of options on the market. Mal Michael *might* be one, but he is 29, his body is battered and he's shown a liking for dollars. The truth is that whether Leo makes the car look nice and shiny or not, the car goes very well. We weren't the second best defence in the league this year for no good reason.
Look at some of the second rucks this season; Seaby, C Cloke, Fanning, Taylor, Jamar, PJohnson, Minson (He was even playing N1 ruck) etc. I'd trust Shaw/Erikson to do five minutes of rucking a game, that is, if Doyle gets injured again.Originally posted by cruiser

I'm not against getting Everitt, but we can't pay over the ods to get him, or miss out on a key defender. Barry cannot do the job in my opinion. Not big enough.Comment

Why is getting a key defender more important than a ruckman?Originally posted by Bleed Red Blood
or miss out on a key defender.
We have one of the best defences in the competition. We now have a good CHB and an All Australian at FB.

Because if LRT, Leo or CBolton miss a game next year we would have someone like Grundy or Campbell playing on the second or so best forward. I'd rather Erikson or Shaw playing as second ruck for five minutes than a debutant playing a full game in defense.Originally posted by cruiser

Leo is too small, and LRT while still young and relatively inexperienced could be very out of form.Comment

Ahhh an argument surely to keep Saddo or to a lesser extent Powell - especially considering Shuable and Nicks has retired. Although they could do what they did in 04 - Goodes to CHB, he sems to be a bit of a Mr Fix it in times of injuryBecause if LRT, Leo or CBolton miss a game next year we would have someone like Grundy or Campbell playing on the second or so best forwardComment

Goodes at CHB is terrible.
He didn't play particularly well there. And it really creates a gap in our midfield. Plus, it means we are matching Goodes on someone, instead of having the opposition worry about a matchup for him.

Agreed - born more out of neccessity more than anything else.Goodes at CHB is terrible.
Hay = Hack, sorry slow hack who cant mark or kick - was good maybe 5 years ago. Definite step backplease dont get hay
But to be honest its hard to find key backman come trade time - lets invest in our youngsters maybe Grundy, Campbell & Co
Unless scarlett wants to win a premiershipComment
