If old people are worried about being stupid and getting hurt, they should drink more.
But I dont think they serve Pimms or a Port and lemonade at the bar

And agree hitting your face on the pedestrian crossing doesnt hurt any where near as much when you are smashed.

seriously though I see week in and week out so many people of all ages struggle with the steps because there is nothing to hold onto unless a person sitting in the aisle offers a hand - seeing some of the oldies getting dragged up and down those steps by relatives is quite frightening at times.

Just takes one to fall and the injured party take legal action and the trust might just sit up and listen - but having had dealings with their risk manager a few years back - and what a stitched up dragon she was - the words "now that woman needs a good r**t" seemed to sum her up perfectly (harsh, unsavoury even, but damned accurate) you would have thought the trust money was her own and there was no way she was going to part with it.

The SCG is a death trap waiting to happen. Its taken over Optus Oval as the AFL's "Hillsborough" waiting to happen. Put it this way if the SCG was in Europe and the Swans were an European Soccer Club, then made though to either the Champions League or UEFA Cup its very unlikely that UEFA would pass the SCG safe for use for these competitions and would force us to play our "home" matches on a nutual ground.

Hopefully this makeover solves most of the problems the ground has but for a ground that is mainly build before the 1990's its always going to have its problem areas.
      Once was, now elsewhere

A makeover is not going to help all that much, it really needs a complete reconstruction job, just as the MCG has undergone in the last 20 years.

After going to the magnificent MCG on Saturday night, I will argue for major renovation (demolish and rebuild the MA Noble, Bradman, Messenger, O'Reilly and Walters stands) at the SCG until it actually happens.
          Occupational hazards:
I don't eat animals since discovering this ability. I used to. But one day the lamb I was eating came through to me and ever since then I haven't been able to eat meat.

Yeah the MCG is a fantastic stadium and I'm not one for sentimentality or preservation of a stand simply because it is old. The MCC made a wise decision in demolishing the old members stand which had been there since 1930.

I too would like to see brand new stands in place of the current hill, O'reilly, Bradman and Noble stands and the Messenger, well the less said about that joke the better.

The SCG really is a joke of a venue. It has great history and heritage in the Members stand etc, but it appears that the SCGT care for the members and don't praticularly care about the general public sitting in the rest of the ground.
That's the problem with modern day medicine - there's no more natural selection of the species.
No wonder there's so many Collingwood fans.

Its not just those stands, its the whole lot!! Each week we are at the SCG I watch the elderly members and guests trek to the top of the O'Reilly and back down again and in all honestly I'm keep expecting someone to fall from the top to the bottom ... its a concrete death trap!

And its not just the elderly - its the disabled, pregnant, people toting kids, people toting cups of beer, or even people trying to watch the game and walk down the stairs at the same time. If they don't rebuild these other stands, they should put in handrails as a minimum.

(Interestingly, I am fairly sure the stands don't meet the requirements of the Building Code of Australia because as I understand it, it is illegal to have horizontal railings on a elevated area above 4m - which the side of the O'Reilly stand is ... so surely there are legal reasons for having it fixed.)

Cruiser and I were talking about the MCG on Saturday night at the game, it is the first time I have been back there since it was finished. It truly is the most magnificent stadium I have had the pleasure of watching sport at.

How come everyone gets to meet this mysterious Cruiser person and I never do.

I thought Cruiser was female, so no wonder I got think wrong when I was trying to work out what 'he' looked like.

Mate, as someone who's an SCG Member, you should well know the place will never be a serious show whilever Lord Rodney of Cavalier runs the joint.

This is a joker who refuses to go to one-day games and wanted to turn the fence back to white pickets. I mean, I'm a traditionalist too but f*&^ me - you're running a major stadium, mate, not a country oval.

And with Lord Rodney on the throne, don't expect the Swans to get a look in on the new stand - it'll be Spofforth or Trumper. I love my cricket too but seriously, get your hand off it Lord Rodney.

Too right - there is no way known that an AFL player will get a name on a stand, there are a heap of rugby league or union players who are way up the list to get a name on there, and they are after the cricketers so AFL wont get a look in.

Which is quite amazinbg considering the Swans are the major winter tenant of the SCG. Personally I don't think it matters what they call a stand, the fact is they need new stands at the SCG.

No I dont think you are suspicious, when I was on the Swans forum a few years ago they were asking us a heap of questions about Telstra stadium, what we thought of it etc - it was hinted then that there would be more games per year played out there - so this may be the opportunity they have been waiting for to move out there permanently. They can still have the training grounds at the SCG - along with their offices - which makes sense - the league clubs do it (have their admin and training facilities elswehere) so why cant the Swans.
