It is called CRICKET ground, not a FOOTBALL ground.

You don't see too many stands at the MCG named after footballers.

I think the mix of names is reflective of the grounds history, mostly cricket, heaps of league, and a little bit of AFL.

Hence all cricketers except Dally Messenger, Clive Churchill and then Kel not quite crackin' it for a stand.

As for an earlier mention of Rugby, what the?? Don't think it has ever been used except maybe a LOOONG time ago for tests??? maybe??

Too right. The Stand brothers, Northern and Southern, to me will surpass the Waughs as Australian crickets most successful brother combo. Southern Stand had been showing his age a bit and has had a bit of a makeover recently, but Northern Stand, looks tremendous of late and is in great touch.

I'm pretty sure it was used Pre SFS days for Rugby.

I also forgot that some of the stands there, were named and footballers.

I assume it would have been too, unless they were using the sports ground next door, but I would imagine rugby tests must have been at the SCG back then.

I actually think if the swans moved to TS permanently, it would become the AFL ground in Sydney, eventually only being configured rectangle for State of Origin, Grand Finals, Rugby tests and Asian Cup finals

Do you think they would be allowed to use the ground all through pre-season training? Cricket there is pointless!

I also think this will NEVER happen.

I have a sneaking suspicion that the new stand will actually be a sponsored stand?i.e Telstra End or something like that. The SCG know they will never get away with renaming the ground (and don't want to) with a sponsor, but this could be a good money grabber without too many issues.

As for naming it after an AFL player, it is certainly a possibility if they go down that route, we have been tennants for 25 years and are the only likely winter tennants for the next 25.

Naming the SCG after an AFL player, come Damien. What are you seriously smoking? When the Trust are constantly coming out with comments such as "we have a perfect purpose-built facility for cricket" you can bet your bottom dollar that there will NEVER be a stand repesenting an AFL player at the ground.

If they had the Telstra End the Swans who are sponsored by Optus may not horribly enjoy it. If we lose our club sponsor because of an arrangement made by the SCG Trust will they be compensating us in any way at all?!

Um but that money is only into their admin centre & gym facilities, they are really the only tenant, so that could remain that way regardless. The trust along with the cricket board & the Swans all contirbute to the maintenance of the ground.

Souths have their training areas & Admin (I think) at Redfern and play their games at Telstra.

Canterbury train and have their admin at Belmore - yet they play at either Telstra or the Showground.

So really where you have your admin office doesnt make any difference - either way if the Swans did leave there - the trust would find a new tenant quick smart.

the thing is it would be more viable financially to move all home games out to Telstra, they always get a bigger crowd and I hate to say it, but the atmosphere is getting on even par with the SCG - it can only get better.

Well JF, it has to be a possibility that the new stand might be named after a Swans great because AFL is a major part of the ground's history and future.

As for your 'Telstra end' comment I'm a little confused by that seeing Ford dont seem to mind us playing in the Toyota AFL and Optus don't mind us playing blockbuster matches at Telstra Stadium.

In anycase JF, you can relax, they are just theories mate!

I have had the pleasure of visiting many major sporting stadia throughout Europe and Australia.

Having been there for the GF, and for matches this season, I would have to rank the MCG as the best I've ever visited (considering all things, such as atmosphere, facilities etc), followed by the Camp Nou and the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff. (Although I'm looking forward to visiting the new Wembley - if they ever get round to finishing it!!)

Sadly, much as I love watching the Swans there, it is a long way short of being a top quality stadium. If the Trust continue with this arrogant attitude that it is a great venue for cricket (debatable at best), and refusing wholesale improvements, it is destined to become just a cricket ground.

Whilst there are some reasonable arguments against moving to TS, I think it will become an inevitability unless there are some assurances on the SCG's future.

At risk of turning this into an www.austadiums.com thread (PLUG PLUG PLUG! ) I have attended stadiums from Canada to Austria. In terms of view of the match & atmosphere I'd rate the AOL Arena in Hamburg the best i have been to. Of the Australian ones I just like the Gabba most of all. It is just more atmospheric than the 'G or Dome for some reason. Every seat there has a great view as well.

The SCG is up there with Manuka as the worst ground in the AFL. We deserve better!

                                The SCG needs a makeover.

It is outdated and the facilities are getting worse every year.
