THE long-running football broadcasting saga seems to have come to a close, with Channels Seven and Ten last night rejecting a $50 million cash bid from Foxtel to buy and televise half the competition's 2007 home-and-away games.

A fine mess they've gotten us into!!
And if Foxtel had got some rights we might have only seen 4 games on FTA for the w/end. This deal was, according to some here, the best thing since sliced bread. But only if you could afford pay TV.

The deal will still get done. All parties need it.

Channels 7 and 10 wont want to show all games.

It would mean Saturday afternoon, Saturday night and Sunday afternoon that they would be competing against each other. Football mid season rates in the teens so it will leave all the non football viewers which is the majority (even) in Victoria to channel 9 who would be the only winner. It would be TV suicide.

If they give away games to ABC , SBS or Channel 31 the stations will have to explain to there shareholders why they gave away something to which they had an offer of $50 million for free. It will be impossible to justify and commercial suicide.

Foxtel will lose subscribers particularly in the southern states if they lose the footy.

          It will happen.

The @@@@ measuring stage is just taking longer than every one would have liked. All parties lose if it doesnt happen so in the end they will all agree that they have big ones and Foxtel will get the footy.

When did it become an inalienable right to view all AFL matches live on FTA?

I didn't say that, but to show less football to the majority of people (FTA viewers) is a backward step.

This is one constitutional amendment referendum that should get passed by 4 of the six states

I hadn't seen anything to say there would have been less on FTA than previously.

As there had been 5 games televised previously, and there was plans for only 4 games FTA for the next 5 years, then that is less, isn't it?

Isn't that a reference to live matches?

Foxtel was able to broadcast four games under the previous contract with Nine and Ten.

I thought Foxtel could show them all but only 3 live. There were always 5 games on FTA in the past even when 7 had the rights without any other FTA networks. The talk is that if Foxtel is involved there would only be 4 games on FTA each week.

As I said, which prompted your snide response, I haven't seen talk that there would only be four games FTA. Last year there were four games on Foxtel and the agreement I saw was for the same deal next year.

I hoped that all the games were on Foxtel, they have better commentators.

I can't find the source, but what I heard was 7 to Friday night and Sunday arvo (1 game each) and 10 to do Sat arvo and night. With the introduction of Sunday twilight games (what a stupid time to try to get families to the footy) 7 was not keen to cut into it's news coverage to show footy, so only 4 games on FTA. Which is less than ever before, however, with the Foxtel bid falling flat this argument is superfluous.
