Off field in a no brainer for me.

      On field.....
      They spit.
Last week a player was fined for relieving himself on the ground - which is ironic (seems more acceptable to urinate on an oval at a public event than down some seedy back alley in town)
Swearing is prevalent on the field.
Can't see much that they could do that would be anti-role model behavior on the field.

The Hall hit was out of frustration and anger.
Happened before, it will happen again.
      The correct penalty is suspension.

Yeah. They are called Rules of the Game, and a Code of Conduct.
We demand rigidly defined areas of doubt and uncertainty.

I asked about what is written in their contracts.

It would be interesting to actually see what is written in the code of conduct.

I think a lot of us are approaching this incident from the wrong angle.

The correct way to look at this is that Barry Hall is officially "Weak as Piss"

            Sack him now.

Bit of a confused post for mine. The players are role models whether they like it or not, the impression they have on kids is exhibit A

I agree Hall is weak as piss & Saturday night, I would have sacked him too. After hearing his apology & the Swans not going to defend the charge, the best thing left is to fix his wrist then ban him from the club for 4 weeks (ie. he's not allowed in). Then maybe the club will mean more to him.

For mine, making sportsmen role models is counter-intuitive. On the other hand if you're getting paid half a million dollars per year you think they'd learn the parameters pretty quickly. Once you're taking sponsors cash you've got to take it up the...

I don't think it really is.
I knew him as a gentle young man, I cannot say for sure the reasons for his decline

Dont act like they dont jump on every little weak-arse story. Like been mentioned by many ppl, something like this has not happened in a long time. The hysteria is virtually justifiable (especially by todays standards)

                        This is the point.

You don't "make" role models, and you don't choose role models as such. Role models are made by society, perceptions and people.

I would suggest that the way Barry Hall has altered his behavior in the past few years, he saw himself as a role model, enjoyed the role, and worked at it.

Ben Cousins never came to terms with it - and I doubt ever wanted it.

Role models have little choice in being role models (other than not being in the public eye). However, the choice of a good or bad role model is theirs alone.
The eternal connundrum "what happens when an unstoppable force meets an immovable object" was finally solved when David Hasselhoff punched himself in the face.

Take away his Cyggy doll I say.

In a moment of anger he punches a player. Another player might not have fallen over.

It was wrong, he'll get punished and end of story. Some of the crap being suggested here is just crap.

In the wider community, people can be savagely assaulted and killed and the perp gets 2 years.

                            The dramatisation should stop

This is probably the most level headed bit of commentary yet about the incident.

"given his lack of a conviction in the past five seasons, means four games, and with the guilty plea he has already offered, just three."

If he gets 3 matches I won't be complaining and screaming for his sacking.
He'll be duly punished as per the law of the game and that should be the end of it.
