I was sitting with a Bird-sceptic at the game today, and by the end of the match he seemed converted. Geez that was a good game by Dickie. He didn't find much of it, but he had a lot of truly terrific touches in the packs. I lost count of the number of times he had one or two Bombers hanging off him, and he managed to fire out a perfect handpass to a teammate which led to a clearance. He was a significant reason we dominated the stoppages in the second half. With each game, you can see him more calm and collected around the stoppages, and his decision making improving. Well, that's confidence I guess. Now he just needs to learn how to break 16 possessions! Pity about the elbow as well, but I don't think it was too bad.

Anyway, aside from Bird, Mattner played an absolute blinder! Not a huge number of possessions, but 12 tackles, plus he generally made his touches count, and created a good amount of run off half back. His best game for us so far, I thought. He's a really good, tough player.

Bevan was simply fantastic defensively, although @@@@ in attack. But then, we didn't need him to be attacking. He laid 8 of the best tackles I've seen in footy for a while, and it was him, along with Mattner, that created so much pressure on the Bombers' forwards and consistently forced turnovers in the Bombers' forward line, allowing us to rebound.

Playfair was great, better even than his 3 goals and 9 marks would suggest, because he led to the right places and gave our forwardline great structure. Once Barlow and White learn how to play as key forwards, we should have three very useful talls up there ready to take over when Mickey and Hall retire.

Our ruckmen were great, easily both their best games for the season (though that's not hard for Spida, he had a shocker against the Dogs!).

I've been defending Buchanan on this forum so far this year, but at half time I was starting to think that he was drifting out of our best 22. But to his credit, he bounced back in the second half, and looked to find some of his form of the past few years. Hopefully he can continue that for the rest of the year. Definitely a game of two halves for Amon.

Jude did nothing much this game. 5 tackles were the only positive, but from what I remember of them even they were pretty soft. He's doing enough not to shock Roos into dropping him, and he's still in our best 22, just, but if Barlow comes back, they decide to take another punt on Smith, or Fosdike or Schmidt find some form after injury, then he should be first to go.

LRT I thought was more than useful today, with limited opportunity. As in, the ball didn't come down his end all that often! From what I could tell he played mainly on Neagle and Hille, and from what I remember, only had two goals kicked on him, one by each (one of Hille's goals was when either Jolly or Everitt was on him, I'm pretty sure). Anyway, 5 marks, no stuff ups. Will by no means stem the criticism of him, but it's a step in the right direction. He has been progressively working back into form over the three games he has played since he stopped playing as a ruckman.

O'Keefe found a bit of the ball, and managed to find the goals as well, for a change, but his kicking in general play was a bit woeful at times. He's almost there, O'Keefe, and he's showing all the right signs, but things just haven't quite clicked into place for him yet.

McVeigh was quiet, but still solid. His work in the packs really has improved out of sight this year.

Anyway, yeah, nobody really had a bad game, I'd say. Oh, except for Kennelly. Even before his injury, he was fumbling and bumbling, and disposing poorly. Definitely a day to forget for Tadgh, but apart from that, solid.

Oh, and the umpiring was shocking, but at least it didn't favour one side over the other. Kinda took the shine over what would otherwise have been an absolute spectacle. And also, what is with our crowds this year? Is it just me, or have Sydney fans had their voice boxes removed or something? I know ANZ Stadium feels dead when you don't get a large crowd there, but even the SCG games have been pitiful. Not happy.

I think what most impressed me today was Henry Playfair's marking. It would be nice if he could kick too, but if he could he would probably still be playing for Geelong. It makes such a difference to the team when they have a genuine target in the forward 50. He seems to have really long arms so that even when you think he's out of position to take the mark, he manages to reach out and pluck it.

Up until today I'd been thinking of Playfair as merely a stand-in until YKW is back. But now I reckon there's room for both of them, maybe with Hall playing as a lead-up CHF, Playfair out of the goal square and Micky dancing and weaving between the two of them.

I think he's been like that since he started and it's why he made it to AFL. Kicking (for goal) is still a major problem and is why he hasn't cemented a regular AFL spot.

I missed Playfairs kicking last time, but now having seen it. Wowser, he really is a shocker. Floated 3 thru which should be good for his confidence.

Great Mark as has been stated in the last few posts.

I wish Kirky wasn't so maligned. Efforts like today underline why he deserves the accolades outsiders give him.

Tremendous effort. Always going in hard, always handballing to advantage, always at the bottom of packs.

He looked a bit tentative at times, but his knee seemed to cop a bit of a pounding at times, and appeared to come through pretty good.

Pretty standard fare for Bevan. Great tackler, has stopped giving away free kicks, but still butchers the ball when under any sort of pressure.

Jude did nothing much this game.

I think both of these two are struggling to be in our best 22.

Only saw it on TV, but that last quarter tackle by Bevan (on Monfries?) in the middle of the ground looked like one of the best, most 'pure' tackles you'll ever see on a football oval.

I don't have any ulterior motive in saying that (not trying to pump the guy's tyres as the next Paul Kelly); it was just an absolute classic of a guy with the ball taking a calculated risk that he had enough momentum to break through the tackler, but instead getting swallowed whole. Not even a HTB given, but no matter; it resulted in a turnover (that almost certainly resulted in a Swans goal; almost everything in the final quarter did).

Hope it was as exciting in the flesh.

Interestingly it wasn't even the second half that we smashed them - it was the last 5 min of the third plus the last.

In that last 5 min we kicked 4 goals and Everitt, Moore, Bird and Buchanan were critical in that run. Some very nice football in that period by those guys particularly.

i thought it was a so so game today, I only saw it on tv unfortunately just couldnt make it to Sydney today for it (Too much damned uni work). We did a lot of good things esp in the 2nd half, and it was good to see Micky o have a good game as did Leo Barry (And I have been a heavy sceptic of him recently!). Thought the youngsters were very good, Jack was a bit quiet but still did some real good stuff, and Bird had his best game yet I think, starting to use the ball a lot better and coming up to speed. I was happy with the way Playfair played today, his kicking is still shocking but his marking was vastly improved on 2 weeks ago and really got in and had a real dig.

Tackling was spot on today. Bevo made some super tackles and Jack I think it was threw in a great one at one stage- the pressure was excellent most of the day in that aspect.

Great to see Malceski get through, and doubly important now the Irishman is out again. Today will tell us not much about our season I think, how we back up next week is so very important. A win on a tough road trip next week not only would be a good old fashioned kick in the guts for Port's season but could really kick start ours. And we have a good draw overall over the next 6 weeks or so and we simply have to win nearly the lot of them if we are to feature come finals time.

Overall, pretty happy with today's effort, the mandatory let go of the pedal in the 2nd quarter and early in the 3rd was disappointing, but we never really looked in danger either.

I think we are very much a work in progress this year. It reminds me a bit of 2005 if we hit our straps we could surprise. We have played some very good football in patches and had our usual stone cold quarters (1st against Saints, 2nd against North, 2nd against Doggies and 4th against Catters). Our youngsters have all played well at times. I thought Moore was terrific today, Bird looked the part and Playfair did precisely what the Swans got him for ...as a tall mobile marking option a good effort in his second game with a new side. He did not come to the club with a reputation as a deadly kick, just as a good mark, and he was cheap!
Good on him and as we all know a bit of confidence is half the battle. Our other recycleds went well Mattner and Richards. We have Fossy Schmidt and Barlow to come back plus Tige and BBBH fresh for the finals. Not all bad, we have a tough draw but we are not dead yet!!

5 goals, actually! Bombers were 12 points down with 7:30 to go in the quarter, we led by 41 with 2 mins to go. I know it was only against Essendon, but you expect that sort of thing from Geelong! But if anyone asks, we're the dour, ugly Swans, k?

I agree that we could do some damage if we hit our straps later in the year but to be honest I don't think the events of 2005 could ever be repeated.

And pretty standard fare from you. He played very well today. He didn't butcher the ball at any time. And hit Magic on the chest with 50 metre pass into the forward line. Why don't you just admit you couldn't pick an emerging young talent?
