Checking the video I see that Johnson had a gun and took a shot at Goodes who had to duck out of the way into the path of Bartram who was drawing a lead pipe from his back pocket and Goodes had to quickly take him out with a bump to the head to protect himself. Totally a case of self defence and I expect him to get off on this basis.Comment

Captain Logic is not steering this tugboat.

As usual, the AFL is turning something striaght forward into complete farce.
The previous infraction was dealt with appropriately according to the current point system, but the AFL (AA and AD) was left red faced by the seeming innappropriateness of the outcomes. A case of procedural fairness being glossed over by a hysterical Melbourne media looking for justice to be seen to be done.
So they (or tribunal or match review panel or whatever it is) see this one and think, 'we'll square up'. Unfortunately, Goodes did absolutely nothing wrong. He kept his elbow tucked in, he did not jump off the ground and the bumped the Melbourne player in vicinity of the ball. i.e. it was effectively a shephard.
They could argue it was reckless because contact was made with the Melbourne player's head, but as per comments by J Brown, if the rules are such, they may as well outlaw bumping becuase there is NO WAY you can ensure the guy you bump does not go offline and hit his head on your shoulder.
If this is the direction that footy is going, I will suggest to our local OzKick coordinator to ditch the bumping drill (which all the kids love). He had observed that people who did lie were, on the whole, more resourceful and ambitious and successful than people who did not lie.Comment

It's a bizarre and inconsistent decision from the panel when you consider all the contact that was deemed "not sufficient to warrant a report" such as Stenglein coming off the line and hitting Goodes with an elbow. On the other hand the match review panel seem to make decisions not on merit but on outcome, hence they (rightly) felt that this incident PLUS the previous one deserved one week.
Will almost certainly get off becauise the contact was simply noy hard enough for a report (Notably less that Buddy's or Goddesy's previous two, or Kirk's.....which were all Low).
HOWEVER
For the good of the club and the season as a whole I think we should cop the ban, otherwise we will end up like Collingwood.....and look how that attitude is working for them!
Honestly, take the week, shut up , learn and get better. I think Goodesy will play better for the rest of the year if he has a week off (mentally). Just watch, you reasd it here, if he gets off on appeal he will not play well against Collingwood or for tmost of the rest of the season.
If he takes a week he will come back at 100%"I'll acknowledge there are more talented teams in the competition but I won't acknowledge that there is a better team in the competition" Paul Roos March 2005Comment

Secondly, I too have been prises at the willingness of so many here to accept a week off for what doesn't deserve a week.
Especially given the abuse directed towards Hall over his suspension. The difference between insanity and genius is measured only in success.Comment

I also think that the comments here saying he should do the time, it will do him the world of good, he'll better after his suspension is served, are all sily comments. Out of all the incidences he has been up for, this is by far the softest, if you watch it in slow motion, he actually attempts to protect himself. This may sound silly, but what actually happens is, Bartram's head runs into Goodes' shoulder, not Goodes' shoulder runs into Bartram's head. What I would love to see is, the swans appeal, Goodes getting off, and then me sitting back reading all the comments on Big footy about him being a protected spieces, the MRP being a joke, and Johnno pissing himself with laughter.Comment

Much as I love Goodsey, I agree. He seems to have got into a habit of running at opposition players shoulder first, and as soon as I saw the hit in Sunday I knew he was in trouble. I think just to shut up the Melbourneites who froth at the mouth about him being a protected species he should just take the week suspension and move on.Comment
