Carlton set to swoop on O'Keefe

It is likely he will seek to use that method to get to Carlton, after the Blues on Thursday night offered him a four-year contract worth significantly more than the three-year deal the Hawks had put on the table.
It caused O'Keefe to switch to the Blues as his preferred destination.
That late change of heart prompted Hawthorn to cease their dealing with the Swans on Friday morning, after having earlier tabled an offer of draft picks 16 and 50 in return for Sydney's selection 30 and O'Keefe.

Looks like Carlton pulled a swifty on us and the Hawks.

Wow, if all true that's actually pretty suckful.
I knew him as a gentle young man, I cannot say for sure the reasons for his decline
We watched him fade before our very eyes, and years before his time

Once again Hawthorn has demonstrated what utter @@@@s they are when it comes to negotiating a trade, to the point that they also end up with nothing. I hate them. As for ROK and Carlton, I hope he ends up playing for Freo.

Does Carlton have enough room in their salary cap to set conditions that the other clubs in the PSD couldn't meet?

I wonder how much the reliability of top picks will have to increase before the likely benefits of using the draft begin to exceed those from recruiting mature-age/ready-made players from other clubs/codes/countries. Some might argue we've already reached this point, but it would appear the draft can still be something of a lottery beyond the first handful of picks or so, and a lot still depends on how good clubs are at identifying young talent.

I guess each club/coach has their own assessment of the relative probability of success for each trading strategy. Not hard to guess which one Roos favours!!
Yes, it's an interesting question. In another post, my suspicion, which I might be able to work out with more scouring for club list turnover data, is that success is related to the speed of list turnover. If you are in a lottery, buy lots of tickets to improve your chances.

Although I think Shaw is a decidedly average (and old) player, I am not displeased with retaining our first two round picks. I guess they figure that losing ROK means parachuting in some experience. But let's face it, some of of this guy's 'experiences' are not what our younger players probably need right now.

I remain pessimistic about our immediate future on field performances with our list in its current state but am satisfied the club is waddling its way towards where it should have been some time ago.

I'd think Carlton would have plenty of room. By the time their young guns are up for negotiation it will be time to put Fev, Judd and ROK on the veterans list.

wow Carlton really are above the law.. how the heck can they fit him in their salary cap?

                      Visy payments?

Will be interesting if ROK goes back to moneybag mode or stay true to the Swans.

I thionk the Swans financiual offer to ROK, is about as good as he will get from elsewhere..the rsik he faces, is that he wont know who he will get it from..it would be unlikely that he would fall through to Carlton..and faces SA or Perth, or even the Dons..he would be very fool hardy to take that risk, unless he has totaly burnt his bridges at Sydney.

He'll probably need the extra money to keep the missus happy. Isn't she a Sydney girl? She'll be racking up the ff points if they do move down to Melbourne.

But they will if the AFL change the rule which is slated for review where players can transfer years of service....or did that get kyboshed already?

As for Visy payments - Pratt will be throwing his position statements and portfolio valuations in the bin like the rest of us.......

That has never been an option, nor will it be in relation to the veterans list. The whole point of having a veterans list is to reward a club and player who have continual service for more than 10 years by providing the club with some more room in the cap and the player a chance to earn more in the last years of his career.
