I'd think Carlton would have plenty of room. By the time their young guns are up for negotiation it will be time to put Fev, Judd and ROK on the veterans list.

Im a blues supporter and dont see the value in a 27/28 yo even if he is ROKs quality. The word is Marc Murphy is happy to resign but negotitations are on hold until they see who is avail in the preseason draft and then they can adj his new contract ie backload it depending on what they may need to spend.

Personnally Id prefer to see us develop our own unless a mutally agreeable trade is reached - plus living in Sydney the only joy Ive had in 6 years is you blokes winning and I hope you stay up.

That has never been an option, nor will it be in relation to the veterans list. The whole point of having a veterans list is to reward a club and player who have continual service for more than 10 years by providing the club with some more room in the cap and the player a chance to earn more in the last years of his career.

I thought the AFL were going to consider it as a partial step toward free agency. I read some articles earlier this year in the age where they were going to consider some modified form. I think it was around the time the frenzy was well and truly whipped over Judd moving. Given players are younger on the Rookie list, it's not outside the realm that a player could be a 10 year player at a club at 28 and then transfer to a new club but not be able to be placed on the vets list which disincentivises (sp?) clubs to trade for older more experienced ones. I imagine that will be a conundrum for GC17.

I think GC are going to get substantial salary cap concessions for many years which will compensate them for lack of access to a veteran list concession.

I wouldn't have thought the AFL would sanction a change to enable veteran list entitlements to be transferred to a club so they can use them to not even attempt to trade for a quality player and then plan to use cap shenanigans to get them past 5 other clubs in the PSD.

The crucial line in the ninemsn article is:

Which neither the author, nor O'Keefe, have the slightest idea about. And given that on any version of events, Essendon have plenty more space in their cap than Carlton, that's a dream pretty unlikely to become reality. That is to say, for him to get to Carlton, one or more of the previous 5 clubs would have to choose not to pick him, rather than find him 'out of reach'.

That's looking like some pretty weak-arse 'swooping' at the moment.

I am sure most of us are getting a little sick of this whole thing. I would hope that ROK would not shaft the club and to walk out, would be a disgrace. Obviously there is a lot we don;t know.

What concerns me is Carlton. If they wanted ROK and obviuosly there had been some "discussions" between Carlton and ROK's management, yet were encouraging him into the PSD, one would have to question whether that complied with the Drat and Trading rules. Its time it all came out, and if Carlton were negotiating with the Swans, but made no offer at all, and were simply encouraging him into the PSD, I would believe that would fall nder "draft tampering".

Difference was Spida was under contract with the Hawks for 2006 and ROK is off contract for 2009.

I wonder what Carlton's salary cap looks like for next year. Can they offer him something crazily front loaded? Does anyone know if there is a limit to the % of the total value that can be front (or back) loaded into the contract? I know in the NBA there is a maximum % increase or decrease allowed over the course of a contract to avoid completely salary cap stuffing.

From what I gather they were interested in him previously at the price he had put on his head but just didn't want to meet our trade requirements- I wonder if their Thursday night offer was close to 4 years @ 600k per season? Even if they dropped down because of the extra year to 4 years @ 550k per season then I have to admit I can see why ROK would either pull the plug on 3 years @ <$450k at Hawthorn or on 3 years @ $450k at Sydney (and seemingly screw the Swans around)... $850k guaranteed difference for the course of the contract if at 550k per season or potentially $1,050,000 guaranteed difference at 600k per season! Considering we are talking in the realms of $500-600k pa then we have to be realistic as footy fans and accept that an extra million bucks (or close to) guaranteed is too much for a footy player to turn down.

Was it alleged that a certain high profile footballer spent some time in the can, or was that person bailed out because of who he was? Said player went down at the Lake Oval one day, my brother yelled out bring out the pentridge doctor and was promptly set upon by a lunatic from the back of the crowd. I also recall some allegation of probably the biggest name in the VFL who IIRC was at the Blues at the time being away while his furniture factory burned to the ground.

Then there was the first mentioned high profile person who was caught red handed breaking into the ceiling of a factory in the northern suburbs. Unfortunately the names slip my memory. Of course it was all heresay.

Another ocasion that comes to memory was when a midfielder was poached from our club and it was rumoured that he promptly moved into a home in the salubrious suburb of Kew.

Then there was players with pubs etc.etc and who can forget the cheque book recruiting that won most of their clubs premierships that IIRC caused the bringing in of the salary cap.

Fancy Judd being an ambassador for Visy, fair dinkum they get away with murder. Is it that the AFL don't have the guts to rip draft picks off them once again?

Clubs have obviously shied away from that figure and with the finance world the way it is they are prudent to say "can we, under the current climate, guarantee that figure for 3 or 4 years.

The Pentridge reference does age me doesn't it? My Dad used to give it to the same crim but no one put the dukes up thankfully. Bob Menzies Rolls parked behind the goals at Pentridge Park used to turn my dear old Dad, an otherwise eminently reasonable man into a rage. They never were any good and never will be.
