There is absolutely no reason for the Swans to take a deal that is less than what he is worth.
But as I said if Hawthorn know something that the Swans don't (which would be natural considering O'Keefe would open up to his suitors and ditch us as you would an old flame) then it is possible that he could walk or at least threaten to walk to scare the Swans into doing a mediocre deal with the whorks

The current posturing at present is nothing more than whether the deal is done for pick 16 or pick 16 and a player.

I have said this many a time over the last couple of days, Hawthorn would not have bothered to speak to ROK and convince him to drop his salary demands if they were not prepared to part with pick 16. They would have given him sort of gaurantee that they were serious about the trade and were willing to meet any realistic demands from us, and pick 16 is a realistic demand.

There are only three options now and they are likely in this order:

        * The deal is done for pick 16 or pick 16 and a player
        * The deal is not done and ROK pissed off with the Hawks and Carlton for not doing the deal bites the bullet and stays
        * ROK walks out and takes his chances in the PSD

Of those three the last is an option but probably the least likely.

That assumes that pick 34 and a player the Swans don't really want (or even worse, two players they don't really want) if of any more value to the Swans than losing him for absolutely nothing.

Say we take 34, Taylor and Clark

          We gain

          - a poorly skilled 26 year old who is very fit but not much else and who would be vying with someone like Fosdike for a first team spot (I rate Fozzie higher) while the other becomes a list clogger

          - a so-so ruckman who may well get senior games next year but at the expense of getting experience into Currie. Since the Swans have stated they're not interested in trading for an experienced ruck, he too becomes a list clogger

          - an upgrade from pick 46 to pick 34 (whoppee - all of 12 spots). I doubt the Swans will draft more than three players so that is essentially the value of Hawthorn's second round pick

          What we lose

          - any remote chance of persuading ROK to remain a Swan. It may be close to nil already - who knows - but as soon as we sign off on that deal it really does become zero

          - two valuable spots on our list. I've frequently posted that already one or two youngsters are likely to get the chop at the end of this year who probably deserve another year or two to show what they've got. Even with ROK off the list, make no mistake that these list cloggers are going to cost either Thornton or Laidlaw or Smith or O'Dwyer or Brabazon or Grundy or Brennan a spot on the list. At least a couple of those are probably already doomed but at least one more has to lose out from the above deal

          - increasing the gap between the Hawks and most other clubs. They are a good young team but they are not unbeatable - clearly. They got lucky that the best team in the competition had one of its worst games for the year when it counted. But add ROK to them and they'll be that much harder to beat. Surely we'd rather see him at Carlton or Essendon from a competitiveness POV?

          - any semblance of credibility at the trading table in the future.

To me, those losses are so so much greater than the gains that its a no-brainer for me. Even if we land up losing ROK for nothing in the end.

Time will tell but Pelchen was quite emphatic today in saying that Hawthorn wanted to keep their first round pick in this draft.

But when the Swans nominated Lewis, who was not on the list of untouchables, the Hawks were quick to add him to that group and decline the deal.
Heh. That's not going to help with Pelchen's popularity on here.

Not surprised the Hawks baulked at Lewis. I think he's a bit over-rated and his on-field discipline is shocking but it was an ambitious ask by the Swans.

Still, surely there have to be some decent players between their top 8 or so and Taylor / Clark that the Hawks could live without.

So who would their other 7 or so 'untouchables' be? Clearly Buddy, Mitchell, Roughhead, Hodge. Almost certainly Bateman, Rioli. Would be very surprised if Sewell wasn't on the list too.

No need to put Crawford on the list since he wouldn't be an option. And while I suspect they'd add Croad if the Swans named him, they'd probably perceive he wouldn't be of interest to the Swans so wouldn't waste any of those spots by naming him.

Still means that some players of the quality of Young, Williams, Gilham, Morton, Elllis, Murphy, Thorp must have been deemed at least negotiable.

It was named on BF, before the article came out

Franklin, Hodge, Mitchell, Roughead, Sewell, Brown, Rioli, Bateman plus the late addition of Lewis.

It is hard to believe that if ROK really had his heart set on Carlton and hever had any intention of joining the Hawks that he wouldn't have mentioned this to Roos and co, and stopped them wasting their time discussing the Hawks' playing list so they could instead focus on discussing the Blues' list. Can believe that it was his preference (given money had to be a big motivating factor) and can believe that he has now re-raised whether some deal can be done with Carlton. But most likely is that he had some interest in the Hawks but was never prepared to take as much of a paycut as they wanted him to.

Any bets that the "source" close to ROK is, in fact, Pilchard No 2 - Petroro?

Roosey could of course be talking out of his backside but if Port really have indicated they'd take him in the PSD, that's pretty good for us. Will force Carlton to come up with something if they really do want him, or alternatively might persuade him to stay put.

I'd even take a straight swap for Young or Morton. I can't believe how stingy the Hawks are, what a terrible mob to deal with.
