Are you quite sure that Rohan won't play next year? That's what everybody said about Daniel Hannebury too mate this year.

Check out his Q&A on the swans site. He looks skinny and is on a program of gym and running before he can join the main group at training.
You'd have to expect that the coaches will have him in Canberra for at least a year given their past history with draftees.
I would think we are in deep trouble injury wise if he is playing.

That is where he will be listed, We will probably play with 3-4 forwards: Bradshaw, White, Vespa and Goodes with a couple of mids floating through for a rest (if you can call it that)

I didn't say Rohan wouldn't play I just think the others are more likely ( only got gut feeling to go on) to play serniors than he is. I would be stoked if Rohan was good enough start.
We had a lot of injuries last year Hannebery was given a go and grabbed on with both hands and didn't let go.

I suspect one big difference between Hannebery and Rohan is their base level of fitness. Last pre-season, Hannebery was recording 3km times right up there with the best runners in the club. I think he finished first in the 3km run at his draft camp. So despite being very young, it sounds like he'd either worked incredibly hard as a teenager to build his fitness up, or that he is just blessed with good natural endurance (or both).

Reports of Rohan suggest he doesn't currently possess the same endurance base, and he's unlikely to achieve it over one pre-season. Presumably, if he works hard he might get a few chances late in the season, as Veszpremi did in his first year, but of all the tools a player needs to survive at senior AFL level, I'd guess that at least a certain level of endurance is pretty fundamental.

I thought I had better have a go at this. I've put my view of the automatic selection in bold for Round 1. The other spots are all up for grabs. I'm really looking forward to preseason comp given Roos has stated we are going to take it more seriously so it will be really interesting to see the jostling for positions

I watched a couple of replays of the early rounds and Brett Meredith was very very good so I am really looking forward to seeing him back in the seniors. I've taken a punt that Dennis-Lane will get a run as the small forward but that could be Bevo/Vesz/Moore.

The HB positions are fun with Shaw, Mattner, Malceski and Kennelly to choose from.

I'm hoping The Eski is back to his cool best in 2010 so I found a spot in the forward line.

It's going to be a fun season I think watching how the team develops and gels.

              No love for Jude?

And going in with one ruckman is throwing things to the wind a tad, especially a ruckman whose spent the last two years playing in teh WAFL.

I reckon it would be a fair call that Dale Thomas, Leone Davis, Alan D etc were certainly no 10min 3km runners

not even close.......yet they emerged nice an early......because they have the X factor

                2010 a world of possibilities !

Thought I would give this a go

If all fit and available : Bold are Certainties
All our recruits will play, always does so they are montys.
Really would love to Mary and Vespa start. Good mates from junior days and if fit, they will play well together rekon they will be great around Bradshaw, Goodes and Jesse. How good will Jesse be ??? (Great new Tatt he has now )
Love the look of our backline now.
Couple of talls, run, pace and experience. think we will be OK here
Centres : This is where its hard, we have some options finally
Jude deserves 1st crack, great couple of years and he still looks OK.
Kirkys a given, though may spend more time rotating this year
Love the fact we look like we can use Adam Goodes up front.
Really excited about what we couls see up front this year.
Wait till some of you see GARY ROHAN, many think he is a mile away, mark my words it wont be long till he plays Senior Footy.
Excited about Lewis Johnstone. All reports things are going well and this kid will play this year as well. as said earlier, Vespa has the game and now must deliver ad we know what he can produce when he is on song.
Daniel Bradshaw as long as fit will kick us 50 odd and we wont miss Hall at all.

Guys who Ive left out are
Birdy, whilst many rate him I dont. Will always be slow and just doesnt do anything that I can get excited about. Doesnt kick goals and is so dour, though still will be in the mix and will put pressure on others for a spot.
He needs to have greater impact with the possessions he gets and tackle more and more importantly be accountable for his opponent.
Jarred Moore as well. Again I like him, though others are in front of him now and he has to earn his spot the hard way like the others.
Teddy Richards. Normally I would pick him, though with Tadgh back and the improvement of Heath Grundy last year he will need to battle for a spot.
Another is Nick Malceski. He aint in the mix.Only going off how he finished last year and he was a shadow of the player he was before the injury
Apparently feeling good, though he said that many times last year.
How good would it be if he came back the way he was once going. Hope so

There is a very positive story about Nick Malceski just posted today on the Swans' Official Website. It refers to him acknowledging his poor form in 2008. But is also talks about him getting a lot of inspiration and general assistance from Rhyce Shaw this training summer.

Yes, I know it can be spin, but just image if Malceski and Kennelly both return in 2010 to their respective peak forms. Assuming Shaw, Mattner, C.Bolton, Grundy, Richards all continue their 2009 form, that would be quite an impressive backline!

Bevan has already been told.........go to the HF line or perish !

Mal has been given the challenge of getting back into the 22.

                          Tag, LRT, Shaw
Mattner, Bolton, Richards/Smith (depending on match ups each week as we need Shaw free)

I think Shaw is too important in his role of counter attack........There is not too many players in the comp that can week in week out zip out of the back line with not a defender in sight.......and

When Shaw does this he automatically gives us a free man as one of the upfield opposition players has to leave his man to pressure Shaw or Shaw keeps running into space !!

This can not be underestimated. Tag and Shaw doing this week in week out will be amazing for speeding up our play. There is no reason Mal cant change between wing and HFF..........as long as he can match his wing opponent in the fitness dept

But if Jetta gets the right wing position its going to be lonely on the left wing anyway

I agree completely with your team. Looks very very good. Though I tend to disagree on Bird. He is a tough player and I think that he is a definite in for our team next year. Its just hard to see who out of that team will get dropped. Backline looks good. Smith is a great tagger on small forwards, Mattner great tackler and tough, Kennelly with speed, etc. If there was another problem I would pick out it would be McGlynn. Im not to sure if he will be a definite starter but we'll see. I'd prob swap him with O'Dwyer or Bird, or maybe Johnston.

I'm very happy with that team, and the assumptions made about its selection.

Merideth may get the 1st game over the speedsters and recruits, but will be one of the doubtfuls by Round 5.

Bird may be the longer term replacement for Kirk, and both in the team may reduce the "speed" which is the excitment promise for 2010.

It will be interesting to have this thread re-posted when the 1st Round team is selected.

The younger guys often struggle to impose physical presence, including laying tackles against stronger older opponents. Bird is 21 years old. As a 20 year old, in his second season of footy (when most Swans draftees are luck to get a senior game), Bird averaged 3.2 tackles a game and against North in Rnd 14, laid 9 tackles, so not sure why you single out his need to tackle more than say Ed Barlow who averaged around 2 (mostly brushed off) tackles a game.

In regards to his goal kicking, he kicked 5 goals last year, and a couple of those were absolue pearlers. By comparison, Kirk kicked 8. Draw your own conclusions. Judging by the quality of some of his goals this year, he will kick more in the future as opportunities present themselves (i.e. his average game time gos above 60%).

As for dour, I find that a strange observation. Bird's capacity to find space amidst heavy traffic has, on occassions, been breathtaking. A couple of times in '09, I've remarked to Mrs Akimbo, 'How did he do that?'. He's been caught napping a couple of times when in the clear (i.e. tackled from behind), and he definitely needs to lift his intensity to take his game to the next level, which I am sure he will.

I note that most are putting McGlynn and Kennedy in their starting 18. Is this because we feel 'obligated' to do so, given they were explicitly drafted on the promise of greater opportunity? Compared to Kennedy (who, BTW, I rate), Bird is one year younger, but comparing stats at the same age (i.e. when Kennedy was 20), Bird has Kennedy covered for disposals i.e. average kicks (7.2 vs. 5.7) and handballs (8.7 vs. 8.0).

The main concern that Bird will have this year is injury. He is a courageous player and has on occassion come off second best in collisions (including smashing his shoulder, which seemed quite nasty at the time). If he can stay on the park and regularly get 80% + game time, he'll start pulling some big quality possession stats this year.
He had observed that people who did lie were, on the whole, more resourceful and ambitious and successful than people who did not lie.
