I honestly can't see why anyone would start Jude on the bench. Deserves to be in the starting 18, no question.

McGlynn & Kennedy, mainly because I suspect they have been promised game time

Which leaves 13 players fighting for 5 places:
Bird, Smith & Hanna, Meredith, Vesz, O'Dwyer
Richards, Grundy, Barlow, Malceski, Bevan, Moore, Thornton
Thank goodness I won't be calling out the names for the first game in season 2010!!
Has Pyke gone back to Canada or something...........make it 14!.

If you include Mumford and Seaby as "certainties", Pyke isn't really going to be fighting for one of the remaining 5 places. He'd most likely get a look in only if Mumford and/or Seaby were injured.

Currie will hopefully start fighting for one of the remaining places, as a forward if no ruck spot is available. But at the start of the year he probably won't be in the first chasing pack.

White had to kick 20 goals in 2 weeks and have barry hall unceremoniously retired from the team before he got a gig as a starting forward. I think it will be extremely difficult for currie to get a game next year barring injuries. If you consider Goodes, Bradshaw, White, Barlow and Johnston would probably all be ahead of him for a spot as a tall forward.

Mumford, Seaby and Pyke are all probably ahead of him for a ruck gig.

Currie is on the senior list, Pyke on the rookie list. Don't think we can assume Pyke is ahead of Currie for a ruck spot.

I know most people have not seen Currie play, and certainly he needs to prove he's not the next Doyle, injury-wise. But if he can get himself fit he might surprise a few - this lad can seriously play.

When you say seriously play - do you mean if he can string 12 games together he will be fighting for the No.1 ruck spot...or seriously play as in if he really applies himself in 3-4 years he will be a regular in the seniors?

Predictably, I mean somewhere in between.

It would be a tough ask for anyone to lay claim to the number one ruck spot after just a dozen games and his series of niggling injuries over the last year or two will have cost him in endurance.

But when he's been fit, he has absolutely dominated at centre bounces in the ACTAFL - not just getting his hands on the ball but literally palming it down the throats of his midfielders. Sure, the opposition is a long way off AFL level but he looks to have the makings of a very good tap ruckman.

He also has some of the stickiest hands you will ever see, which is why he is a viable tall option in the forward line if one of Bradshaw or White is injured.

He's probably not going to be in the mix for a ruck spot early in the year unless he absolutely blasts it in the pre-season, given the coaches will have in mind playing the two new recruits. But if and when he gets his chance, I reckon he could make a pretty decent contribution as a second ruck this coming season.

                    .
I thought the second instance was unlikely - but maybe the first wasn't. Ruckman take a bit to bulk up, and although he hasn't been playing through injury he's been getting older, and presumably bigger.

A better wording would have been would you be suprised if he was pushing for a ruckplace in 6 months?

I see you would keep my and Shocks core 15 but would not automatically include Kennedy and McGlynn. That would mean 15 guys fighting for 7 spots and you have chosen:
Richards, Grundy, Currie, Mal, Smith, Bird & Vesz. Not taking into account positions I would say fair call - provided Mal is back to his best, Vesz is fit, and taking on board Liz's assessment of Currie. Could be a very good team to start the year with.

yeah,i admit to this being a bit of a kite fly but it is still a great team with Talls on every line and Pace on every line. Teddy was the hard call but the guy is a great bench warmer in the Troy Luff mould. He can come on and play anywhere to cover injury. His courage is inspirational too. This may not be enough this year but whoever makes the starting 22 better play well and not get injured if they want to keep their place!

Pyke looked pretty good as a backup ruck last year in his 1st season we haven't even seen Mummford, Seaby & Currie play for us Christ Seaby couldn't even get a gig with WCE 1st team as a backup.
Pyke has to be in the mix.

Pyke will benefit more from playing 80-100 minutes in the seconds rather than 40 minutes in the firsts, though. He's still learning the game; him getting a few games last year is an enormous credit to him, and is a very promising sign for the future, but we only played him because we had to. He will benefit more starting off in the seconds, and having to seriously compete for a spot.
Officially on the Reid and Sumner bandwagon!
