Agreed. I am quite happy to have Reg starting each week, but it may be at Teddy's expense which I would not be happy about. But that's how it is at the moment. I would almost say an embarassment of riches, maybe an embarassment of potentially v.good footballers . Then again the young kids that looked promising last year may not come along as expected.

His initial movements may appear slow, but he is not slower than a wet week and more importantly his footy brain is speeding up nicely.

Christ, I've been a long-term supporter of Grundy (well, compared to most here), but now I seem to have been overtaken by those that used to bag him (Bear aside)! Grundy put all his tools together towards the end of the season, his game came together nicely, and he played some very confident footy, but he didn't grab any big scalps defensively-speaking, and it was really only for a few games. He has the ability, but he hasn't YET shown enough for us to be calling him a gun and saying he's an absolute shoe-in for a 22 game season, our next CHB, etc.

Having said that, I do agree he should start Round 1. But it's not ridiculous for some to be expressing some doubts. He does lack a touch of pace (though Bear's obsession is well over the top), and there are questions over his one-on-one ability. He could well just end up being a third tall in defence yet. He might not develop the consistency to even do that. He certainly doesn't deserve endless bagging, and he has done enough to cause some excitement, but let's wait a minute before we pop the champagne.
Officially on the Reid and Sumner bandwagon!

Now that 17 is back it is a no brainer.

Neither are particularly good in a one-on-one marking contest but 17 brings far more to the table in other areas.... pace and run out of defence, decision making, 360 degree vision, footskills (which 39 is particularly unreliable with), leadership and vocal encouragement, etc, etc.

Grundy will struggle to get a game. Richards, for all his decision-making flaws, is well ahead as a bench option.
"As a player he simply should not have been able to do the things he did. Leo was a 185cm, 88kg full-back and played on some of the biggest, fastest and best full-forwards of all time, and constantly beat them." Roos.

Kennelly doesn't replace Grundy for mine. I'd like to see Mattner moved to HF and Kennelly slots into his spot on the halfback line. You could even give Mattner more of a midfield role so our forwards can be on the end of his long kicks inside 50.

Either way, Grundy should be in our starting 22, at least for now.

The players in bold are certs or near-certs.

Decided on Grundy ahead of Ted, mainly because he played the last game. Experience counts for a lot with Roos, so Ted's a good chance to start in Rd 1.

I would have 15 of your certs/near certs in my team.
Kirk, Bradshaw, Goodes, Bolton (2), O'Keefe, Shaw, Kennelly, Mattner, LRT, Seaby, Mumford, McVeigh, Jack, White.
                      Plus
McGlynn & Kennedy, mainly because I suspect they have been promised game time

Which leaves 13 players fighting for 5 places:
Bird, Smith & Hanna, Meredith, Vesz, O'Dwyer
Richards, Grundy, Barlow, Malceski, Bevan, Moore, Thornton
Thank goodness I won't be calling out the names for the first game in season 2010!!

I like the look of Shock of Hair and Rojo's sides.

I love Kirk, but will age catch up on the veteran warrior this season? May need to give Bird more game time, and, although I hate to say it, a little more bench time for the Captain.

Richards will be a certain starter if he's fully fit.

I'd say he'd be ahead of Grundy as third tall defender.

The way Roos used Veszpremi during the 2009 pre-season (ie playing him early in games compared to most other youngsters who only got a run late in the game) indicated that Roos intended giving him a lot of senior games right from the start of the season. His finger injury put pay to that, and Vez never really recovered his fitness from there.

Assuming he has a good off-season training campaign (early reports are positive) I think he'll play lots and lots of senior footy in 2010. Watching him play in the reserves intermittently in 2009, it is clear he is several classes above most others around him, including some competing with him for senior spots.

I'd like to see Meredith get a go, but who do you leave out??

Thornton would have to be the weakest link in that team though.

And I glad you included Hanners, he's a definite too, IMHO, Captain.
I think Grundy/Ted/Mattner will play very similar roles in 2010. I'll happily switch out Mattner for Grundy based on 2009 form.
