Bradshaw should make it known he'll retire if he's selected by anyone else but Sydney.

Also reported on SEN this morning that Fremantle may take him in the Pre season draft and then try and persuade him to play for them.

I think if he explicitly says that before the draft, the AFL can ban him from even participating in the draft - meaning we won't get him.

But it's a big assumption that that is what he would do. He's just secured himself a sizeable amount of money for his retirement nest egg. Why would he pass that up? Especially if it means he plays in a city he clearly gave serious consideration to, notwithstanding the fact he finally decided he'd prefer to live in Sydney.

Is he allowed to do that?

Front end the @@@@ out of the contract. If we don't get him at least make them pay up front and @@@@ their salary cap.

Don't believe that can be done. He can only nominate a contract length and an amount per year (or total over the contract). He can't demand that he gets paid $1m in year one and $1 for each of the two subsequent years.

In any case, I don't believe Melbourne have any salary cap issues that would prevent them drafting him.

He can't say that. (that he will only play for Sydney)

The AFL changed those rules circa Plugger coming out of retirement.

But he can say that his 'family is moving to Sydney' and he 'is opening a business in Sydney' etc etc and make it VERY clear that Sydney is his only option without actually saying it.

Thee days clubs don't want to draft players who don't want to be there.

That mindset changed circa Rocca and the Swans.

Yeah he can make things really difficult as in saying that he will live in Sydney no matter who drafts him (i.e commute), make noises about not playing for Sydney will shorten his career etc etc)

Roos already started the whole PR war the other day really, reminding everyone that he really wants to live in Sydney, had 4 kids etc. Expect a lot more of that.

Just reading the article, there are no direct quotes from Melbourne management but it's true about them having room to fit him in.

Gonna have to endure all this speculation till December now.

EDIT: Damien already made that point

Nice in theory but I reckon St Kilda will sign Ball and Thorp will probably go in the ND.

I do however still think he'll end up a Swan

I'd say yes; how on earth could the AFL prevent him from retiring? It's not like raising the pensionable age!
He reminds him of the guys, close-set, slow, and never rattled, who were play-makers on the team. (John Updike, seeing Josh Kennedy in a crystal ball)

They can't prevent him retiring. But they can stop him even participating in the draft if he says beforehand he'll retire if he doesn't go to Sydney.
