There are minimum payment structures in place with the AFLPA. I don't know exactly what level they are at nowadays, but taking into account match payments, I don't think a club can pay a player actually playing senior footy less than $100k, and it could well be a bit more than that. I daresay the Swans have had players towards the end of their contracts playing for close to the minimum wage, just so that they get to keep on playing.

I'm not doubting the money they will be on is small - but more around the ongoing story we hear every year about Hawks stars taking 'paycuts' to fund the recruitment of new highly paid stars. The amount of times I've heard that same dribble year after year they must all be on zero dollars by now! There is only so many times they can take pay cuts to fund other player acquisitions..."You get the feeling that like Monty Python's Black Knight, the Swans would regard amputation as merely a flesh wound."Comment

Actually not true. Just bear in mind how many players the Swans were able to recruit solely by misusing the cost of living allowance. I've read the extra $1m or so being used to (completely) fund the salaries of Kennedy, McGlynn, Buddy and Tippett (as well as the now departed Mumford). I've often marvelled at the cleverness of the Swans' football department to recycle that allowance over so many different players.I'm not doubting the money they will be on is small - but more around the ongoing story we hear every year about Hawks stars taking 'paycuts' to fund the recruitment of new highly paid stars. Swans kept saying that the COLA was not misused and that each player was given the 10%. All cintracts were signed off by the AFL. I find it farcical thatbthere was all the furore over swans revruitment within the salary cap of Tippett and Buddy yet Hawks keep recruiting and keep their older highly paid players.Actually not true. Hawthorn's ability to keep their older, highly paid players has been assisted up to and including this year by the use of the veterans' allowance. However this allowance will be abolished from 2017 so I think Hawthorn should be under some cap pressure, depending on the extent of salary cap increase when the AFL announces the new financial arrangements.
The veterans' allowance also assisted the Swans to manage their salary cap when recruiting Tippett and Franklin, but most of our older players who were eligible to be on the veterans' list have now retired.Comment

Burgoyne said about a month ago on fox that he and his dirty mates would be prepared to take a salary cut to stay on.

It may be a calculated gamble by some of the longer term Hawks players. They would receive a significant sum outside the contract (legally). If their club can remain competitive this will flow at maximum level. To be competitive they need new blood and money to purchase such players. There is also the feeling they love playing footy (whatever the money) and there is nothing like doing it when you are winning.
It also does not hurt their reputation.Comment

Well Said. HEHEHE.!!
Just on the subject of actually not true subjects. They said on radio yesterday morning that they heard a rumour a Swan will announce their retirement, the commentator said hmmm maybe Jarrad McVeigh. The story was actually about Dane Swan retiring!!!Comment

True, and every club does it, so it is not like they are gaining salary cap space that other clubs don't have. Goodes, Shaw et al. would all have been on smaller salaries in their final years.I'm not doubting the money they will be on is small - but more around the ongoing story we hear every year about Hawks stars taking 'paycuts' to fund the recruitment of new highly paid stars. That's what makes it possible for clubs like the Suns to poach players like Mal.Comment
