The fact is that the swans are not only in a salary cap squeeze, which might well be relieved by a sizable increase in the cap from a new player agreement, but also in a squeeze for places on the senior list.
The only obvious senior departures at this time are Ted, Derickx and Hiscox. I think we need 2 more more, preferably 3. We need to upgrade at least 2 rookies, Papley plus either Foote or Newman. Neither will be pleased not to be upgraded. If I had to pick one to upgrade it would be Newman, as Foote really doesn't have many better options than biding his time at the Swans as a 3rd year rookie. We can delist and re-rookie Melican if we want. Marsh will have to stay a rookie with the offer of a senior upgrade for AJ, who will almost certainly start the year on the LTIL. COL is on a 2 year rookie contract.
We have to be prepared to take Jake Brown on our senior list as he might get a bid after the 2nd round. I think we want him. We might have to expand our senior list to 39 if we are forced to match a bid and can't rookie him.
It's not that obvious where these 2 or 3 additional departures will come from, but here are my thoughts:
- Dean Towers: If he doesn't play finals, which seems most likely, I think he's gone. I think Rohan plays better without him in the forward line. We also have a couple of players coming through in Rose and Dawson that seem more promising. Dean will be 27 next year. He has a better chance for a legitimate career somewhere else. I would look for a 2nd or 3rd round pick upgrade, maybe to Brisbane.
- Ben McGlynn: I had him as a near definite delisting a few weeks ago, but if he has a good finals series it could be hard to drop him. He just turned 31 and if he can show he's back to his best, he would be worth a 1 year contract. It will be a tough call.
- Sinclair or Nankervis: There are a few teams that would love to have a backup ruckman, ruck-forward. Richmond, Brisbane to name 2, plus Hawthorn and WCE who have lost a ruckman for next year. I don't think either will see much action next year unless Naismith or Tippett are injured. Sam Reid offers a better backup ruck than either, assuming he's fit to play.
- Tom Mitchell: This thread is ostensibly about Tom, and it may come down to the need to let go of a very good player who are fortunate enough to have plenty off replacements for and use his departure to land a quality player in the draft. It solves a few problems, including list spots, salary cap and creating a much needed midfield spot for several young players.
- Sam Reid: He's a long shot to be traded His value has probably diminished in any case due to his lack of playing this year. I'm sure we would love to keep him. He's a free agent next year, probably a restricted one, so it might be hard for him to move easily if we really want him. I frankly can't see him going, but who knows what's going on behind the scenes.
Except for Towers all the others would be difficult calls. That's why I see Tom as probably holding the number 5 slot for departures atm.Comment

Agree with this.
Given the rise of X Richards and Rohan in the forward line, and Allir in the defence...Abe Davis and Dawson developing well in the 2's....
'Nearly there Sinclair' as a back up ruckman/forward
Keep Mitchell, trade Reid....
IMO he would be worth an early 2nd round pick, which would leave us with 3 picks in the top 40.
Going on recent drafting form, we would be bound to strike gold with at least one of those picks.Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it's time to pause and reflect... MTComment

I still see at least one Brownlow if not more being won by this duo and believe they have the skills to win it without necessarily being a midfielder ( although playing in this position in the field certainly does help )Comment

Reid is a an athletic 24 year old key position player who can play at either end of the ground with 98 games and a premiership under his belt. He's about to enter the prime of his career, to suggest we'd trade him for a 2nd round pick is ridiculous.Comment

Sam won't be going anywhere. X Richards isn't even close to Sam's standard, Rohan isn't KP, Allir has already taken Ted's role, and who knows if Davis or Dawson will even make it.

It's about list management. I'd prefer we keep Mitchell over Reid.
He's 23, our other main extractor, Kennedy, is 28. That's a good age difference for succession.
Reid takes up plenty of salary, has been good, not great, so far in his career, but the big one for me is....
He's showing the same injury issues as his brother Ben...calfs, hammies, quads, achilles...In the supposed 'prime of his career'.
Next year Reid becomes a free agent, or restricted free agent, which makes trading him this year potentially more profitable, and therefore more palatable.Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it's time to pause and reflect... MTComment

You don't have to agree, but to say the idea of trading him is ridiculous...is, IMO, ridiculous.

Mitchell spent much of his early career injured and couldn't hold his place in the senior team and Reid was looking like the next big thing. Sam's form has suffered in the last couple of seasons from having to play as the swing man and not having a defined position, and I think all things considered he did this quite admirably.
After the past twelve months I don't believe Sam would be worth much at the trade table, though I must agree trading him would give us some much needed cap relief, but I think his versatility is invaluable to the team if he can stay on the park.
I personally don't think he's as injury prone as his brother, just had an unfortunate season, but another year like this and I'll be singing a different tune I'm sure.Comment

If we can afford to give AJ 5 years to get right we can afford another 12 months for Sam. If we look after him he's less likely to leave as a RFA in 12 months. If we're only offering Mitch $390k then I can understand him looking elsewhere. He is worth quite a bit more than that.Comment
