In an ideal world we'd have a Nathan Wilson (GWS) style player with a 60M boot on him coming thru about now. Come to think of it,
we did have a similar player, until we traded him for Callum Sinclair. And then there was that other guy, the bloke who kicked the winning
goal in the 2012 GF. Mal something or another.
To be fair to the club, the losses of Jetta and Mal were not at their instigation.

We do have a handful of players who fit the above description - or who might in seasons to come. But they're all developing, unproven, and probably not yet ready.

I agree with you about this. We've got a guy named Nic Newman playing in the ressies that reminds me so much of Malceski. Given that Jones is out and perhaps McVeigh is injured as well, I don't know why he doesn't get a game. We also have Colin O'Riordan, who probably still needs more experience before given a shot at senior level, but he's also one of those running defenders who uses the ball well. He's tracking so well for an Irishman playing in his first year of AFL. I think we'll be okay in that position, at least for next year.

After watching Mitchell on Saturday against Carlton - he's welcome to go. His disposal is terrible; handballs straight to the opposition. What's the point of having 30 disposals if 20 of them result in turnovers or stoppages. To me, he's looking like Jetta this time last year - he's checking out.
He's been linked to Carlton and now Hawthorn. I doubt he'll get to Hawthorn as they don't like players who make so many basic mistakes. As we know, Hawthorn feed off opposition mistakes.

Jetta, I understand he had his family pulling for him to return to WA, so that is a hard one. But my understanding of the Mal situation is he just wanted a longer deal than we were prepared to offer. Anyway, it is what it is, and they are gone. I just think these types of players are fairly unique in footy, and with their best plays like a one bounce, 25m run followed by a 55m kick, they have moved the ball more than half the length of the field in about five seconds. To have this up our sleeve, even if only comes off two or three times a game it is a real bonus. It adds unpredictability into our game and can rattle the opposition. Not many footballers have this type of play in them, but they can be goal kickers and momentum changers especially when we are playing defensively minded teams (like Carlton the other day). I'd be trying to trade for and/or develop at least a couple guys in this mould. It's a "Moneyball" approach rather than spending another $800K for five years on another mid when we already have a full squadron of them.

David Schwarz on SEN this morning said that players only move for more money. He doesn't believe the go home factor has much to do with it. Gave some examples to back his case. he made sense. If Mitchell is going it is because he wants more money than we are prepared to pay.

As I've said before, I can live with Mitchell moving on.
We are strong through the midfield and have more coming through to move there, so it's not the worst loss we can have.
I do wonder if he will be playing as well without the other gun mids around him to take some of the heat and allow him some room.
At least we'll get a pretty penny for him at trade.
Only annoying thing for me is all the work the club have invested in him, and when he finally starts to show some skill, looks to move on.

In reading this thread, I see many comments sooking about Hawthorn's trading and drafting.
Kind of amazing given the history of COLA and the Swans.
Obviously all they do is within the rules, like everything we did.
I don't begrudge them trading well.

Hawthorn did tank to get the Buddy and Hodge picks which set them on this journey.

But the AFL does have a problem with players wanting to move to successful clubs, thereby keeping the poor clubs poor.

they havent done too much about it with nearly every decent player ending up at the hawks. Meanwhile the swans and academies are under constant scrutiny

                  - - - Updated - - -

not sure thats true. Players often leave for the go home factor. In fact they may be getting more than their current contract but that doesnt mean the current club didnt offer more than the new club.

+1 e.g. Dayne Beams, Danger, Jetta and many others I'm sure. I can't think of any homesick Sydney/NSW players that "returned" to play for the Swans - can anyone else?
