    Cloke and O'Keefe are two.

But equally, there are very few who have changed clubs in recent times who were were not either free agents, or went to the expansion clubs.

He may well be going, but it's not the standard situation like other recent cases (Franklin, Ablett, Dangerfield etc) where they were putting off contract talks for 12-18 months.

Mitchell and club were happily talking up the likelihood of a new contract until just before the bye round.

And there is still plenty to play out in terms of being traded, even if he wants to leave and at this moment thinks a club will pay him what he wants.

But we could very easily have had that one. I'll never understand that decision I'm afraid.

We're not privy to internal discussions. It may be that he didn't want to come to Sydney so we chose to take a different path. Who knows? If we had taken him we might not have ended up with Papley (for example).

About the time that Lachie Neale re-signed with Freo, increasing Mitchell value substantially.

The fact is that we have too many players that deserve to be playing senior footy and it's only so long that they would be willing to wallow in the NEAFL. GWS have a lot of these and a fair number should be off to other clubs at the end of this season.

We don't have any senior games to measure Newman on, but based on how they compared at NEAFL level, I would think he would be at least as good as Biggs. We need to find a spot to him. O'Riordan won't be far behind. Rose will work out the few kinks in his game and is close to AFL ready. Reid, Talia, Abe Davis and Zak Jones are on the sidelines with injury. Laidler and Marsh will struggle to break into the senior team. So who goes out of our current side to make room?

These list management questions go beyond wanting to keep good players. It's more about the kind of affordable team you can put together that can produce the best results. It's a worthwhile exercise to 'get the magnets out' and try to put together a 2017 team; then see how many are still on the sidelines.
If we trade out Mitchell I would be guessing that any one we get in would more than likely get given a spot in the seniors, which would still be holding back one of our kids/ressies. There haven't been many recent trades (I will qualify that with "higher level" trades) where the incoming trade didn't get a starting role.

Happy to trade Mitch for a high draft pick or two. Don't we have a couple of decent Academy kids coming through in 2017?

I heard the opposite, we had no one special coming through. But the draft this year is like always being touted as a strong one

I'd package up Mitchell, Towers and Hiscox for Carlton's 1st rounder, probably pick 4. It keeps Tom from Hawthorn. I'd take Andrew McGrath in the draft. Looks like a good deal all around. Does Barry Mitchell work for Carlton now?

With 3 retirements, that makes 6 senior spots open. We take 3 in the draft and upgade 3 rookies (Papley, Newman and a choice from Foote, Marsh and COR).

I thought Barry Mitchell works for us. Maybe we can package him in as well.

                            Doubt Carlton would.

Any reasonable team wouldn't but look at the Blues trading over the last couple of years, it isn't real hot. And who knows if they will change their ways.

                                Towers is a required player.
