AFL Canberra Round 1: Reserves v Belconnen

    10th April 2010
    3.50pm
    SCG

After two wins in practice matches against the East Coast Eagles and the AIS/AFL Academy, the Reserves begin their quest to regain the AFL Canberra title. First up is the defending champions and perennial powerhouses the Belconnen Magpies.

    Previous meetings:
    R1 2009 Belconnen 16.14 110 Reserves 10.5 65
    R6 2009 Belconnen 26.18 174 Reserves 12.12 84
    R11 2009 Belconnen 24.13 157 Reserves 6.12 48
    R16 2009 Reserves 10.15 75 Belconnen 12.19 91

The team possesses a poor recent record against the Magpies, losing 8 of the past 9 encounters (and getting some real touchups in the process). The only victory during this losing stretch was the dramatic 1 point victory in the 2008 Grand Final.

    Possible team list:
    • 8. Trent Dennis-Lane (Knee - test. Will he finally make it?)
    • 10. Daniel Currie
    • 11. Ed Barlow
    • 13. Patty Veszpremi
    • 16. Gary Rohan
    • 20. Sam Reid
    • 22. Byron Sumner
    • 23. Lewis Johnston (Foot - test/1 week)
    • 25. Ted Richards (Senior emergency)
    • 26. Henry Playfair
    • 28. Dylan McNeil
    • 35. Campbell Heath
    • 36. Chris McKaigue
    • 38. Mike Pyke
    • 40. Nick Smith (Senior emergency)
    • 42. Paul Bevan (Senior emergency)
    • 43. Matthew O'Dwyer (coming off 44 possessions last week)
    • 44. Jake Orreal (Back soreness - pending assessment)
    • 45. Nathan Gordon
    • 46. Taylor Gilchrist

There are 20 names on that list, pending injury tests. A maximum of 18 listed players can be in the match day squad, with 13 on the field at the one time. The rest of the squad will be sourced from either scholarship players or local Sydney AFL players.

Scholarship players: Apparently 5 scholarship players Lewis, Lynch, Potter, Guthrie and Wray played last week.

Belconnen have lost a few names from their championship winning side. B&F winner James Bennett has departed for North Adelaide in the SANFL while veterans Steve Mahar and Brock Weston have retired. They still have plenty of quality in forwards Andrew Ainger, Ryan Turnbull, captain Lexie Bennett and Simon Curtis off half-back and ruckman Matt Porter.

I live 10 mins walk from the SCG and it's a realy shame that my membership won't let me back in for the main course if I turn up to the first half of the ressies before going home for a shower, change of clothes, non lousy beers, feed, etc.

    Poor show.

I really don't understand why the SCG police a 'No Pass-Out' policy so strictly. It's not as if there's cheap food just outside to rob their stalls of patrons, for example.

It's why the little brouchure with the players names, team song, etc that came with the memberpack lives in my wallet for this year. The Record may be thicker, but they're dreaming at $5.

You can get pass outs nowadays. Smokers are now required to leave the ground and hence they introduced a pass out system last year.

Pretty sure it is a baby brother. (And Nick spent two years on our rookie list.)

Why the outrage against The Record??

I reckon it's a great read and well worth $5.

I got one for the Round 22 game last year against Brisbane - got there early to watch them unveil the statue of Roosy and the cup, but needed a pass-out to go to our work's social club function before the game... you have to go back in through the same gate you came out to give back the ticket to the person that gave it to you.

Thanks to Ugg and 3B for the Twitter updates. It sounded a more interesting match than the As. Great to see Lewis Johnston on the park.

Ressies were terrific this afternoon. I reckon they'd have given Richmond a run for their money.

We got to the game half way through the first quarter. What a plethora of players out there. Richards, Barlow, Smith, Vez, O'Dwyer, Dennis Lane, Rohan, Johnston, Bevan, Playfair, Currie, Pyke all knocking on firsts selection. We have more depth this year than the massage team for the Swedish women's volleyball team.

Reid was very impressive in the forward line. 5 goals said it all. I though Pyke took some very good overhead contested marks. I think he is slowly improving.

Johnston has blistering pace for such a key tall forward. He walked past Jason Dunstall on the side line and was a few centimetres taller than him. Not long before debut. Very exciting to watch.

I thought Dennis-Lane was OK but a few weeks in the ressies might help. Richards was very good as well.

Some of the higher number players were impressive as well. They did put up the list at half time but too lazy to write down. No 47 and 51 were good. 51 was a big lad. If I remembered my numbers correctly.

Rohan cramped up pretty badly in the last quarter. I thought he had done a quad but it appeared to be cramp as he did manage to walk around later after treatment.

I have a feeling we might surprise alot of people this year.
In memory of my little Staffy - Dicey, 17.06.2005 to 1.12.2011- I'll miss you mate.

                          Topups

47 James Howard - attempted a huge speccie in the 2nd quarter.
48 Jackson Potter - our scholarship player, didn't look anything like his brother from what I can recall.
                          49 Eugene Kruger
                          50 Monty Krochmal
51 Kieran Emery (listed as West Coast scholarship player in 08 - not sure about his status now)
                          53 Jack Barrett

Playfair landed awkwardly on his ankle in the start of the third, didn't see him after that.

Also, the mysterious absence of Byron Sumner continues to puzzle me. I realise the reserves were at their full complement of 18 listed players today, but I would think given a choice between a McKaigue and a Sumner, the coahces would have plumped for Sumner.

Great signs with Johnston and Reid. Two KPP really making progress and with some match fitness they will be banging down the door if they keep up their performances in the reserves.

Rohan and Vesz are two classy players. I reckon just about any other club they'd be in the seniors by now. Can't be long, just a question of finding a spot for them.

Vesz playing down back really reminds me of Luke Hodge. He's a very different player to our running half backs. It will be interesting to see what Roos has in mind for him. He's too good though to be playing in Canberra.

On that performance I think these boys will be putting pressure on for a call-up to the senior side,
