After two wins in practice matches against the East Coast Eagles and the AIS/AFL Academy, the Reserves begin their quest to regain the AFL Canberra title. First up is the defending champions and perennial powerhouses the Belconnen Magpies.
Previous meetings:
R1 2009 Belconnen 16.14 110 Reserves 10.5 65
R6 2009 Belconnen 26.18 174 Reserves 12.12 84
R11 2009 Belconnen 24.13 157 Reserves 6.12 48
R16 2009 Reserves 10.15 75 Belconnen 12.19 91
The team possesses a poor recent record against the Magpies, losing 8 of the past 9 encounters (and getting some real touchups in the process). The only victory during this losing stretch was the dramatic 1 point victory in the 2008 Grand Final.
Possible team list:
There are 20 names on that list, pending injury tests. A maximum of 18 listed players can be in the match day squad, with 13 on the field at the one time. The rest of the squad will be sourced from either scholarship players or local Sydney AFL players.
Scholarship players: Apparently 5 scholarship players Lewis, Lynch, Potter, Guthrie and Wray played last week.
Belconnen have lost a few names from their championship winning side. B&F winner James Bennett has departed for North Adelaide in the SANFL while veterans Steve Mahar and Brock Weston have retired. They still have plenty of quality in forwards Andrew Ainger, Ryan Turnbull, captain Lexie Bennett and Simon Curtis off half-back and ruckman Matt Porter.
