Talk of Jetta's run reminds me of something that totally pissed me off on Sat. night when he did it.

He ran about 50m with Varcoe on his hammer. Was it too much to ask of a teammate to come in and take Varcoe out, shephard, scream out 'boo', anything, just get him off Jetstars tail so he can setup for a kick without that intense pressure?

Ffs, it's just good team football, one of the HFF's should have got on his bike and charged towards the contest, letting Jetta know to just keep going and they'll take care of Varcoe.

We have really dropped off on that aspect of our game.

I've been thinking the same thing about lots of our games recently. Not just in relation to Jetta. There is a pronounced difference between the Swans and the teams that beat them in terms of shepherding, both when on a run and in close.

Aside from the bloke Varcoe was chasing, there is probably no Swan capable of catching up to Varcoe anyway!

This is not a new development. I think I posted in 2005 asking why the Swans so rarely shepherded when every other team did it to good effect. Occasionally we do it but it seems like the player doing it is reverting to school games, rather than recent team training.

I might ask at tomorrow's trivia. It'll be interesting to learn the rationale.

?Our seconds have been struggling a little bit. Some of the guys we would have liked to be playing haven?t really been putting enough pressure on the seniors? guys,?? Roos said.

?Hopefully we?ll see (Patrick) Veszpremi and Lewis Johnston and guys like that but we want to make sure they earn it. You don?t want to be handing games to guys at this stage of the year regardless.

I almost feel as if the question was popped to answer the punters here on RWO.

Unfortunately for those calling for these guys to play , his reasoning makes a lot of sense.

The other side of this arguement is that, until they play these guys at AFL level, they won't know how they well they'll handle the pressure. Given this season has become one of.." learning for the future".. (as spin man Roos put it recently), surely playing the likes of Johnston for a few games would be beneficial, for both player and coaches, going into the next preseason with a clearer understanding of what is required of that player to succeed at the top level..

He's also spent the past month not playing, due to injury, and is clearly not match fit.

Aha! Yes, I have to admit I've not been paying very close attention to the injuries of late. I might have to moderate my criticism of Swans selection policy, well just a bit anyway.

Totally agree. Roos arguement makes no sense. He says the guys in the seconds have to earn it but it seems like, once you get in, you can play poorly for extended periods without repercussions at the selection table.

Earlier discussion about senior players not delivering 1%ers is the repercussion. This sort of policy robs both motivation from those on the fringe and those on the field.
