Sounds like it's a must go. Keep the good tips coming.

From the record, it sounds like scoring a lot is not much of a problem, like American pro basketball!

Is it true that there are about 40 bazzilion players out on the field at any given moment? Sounds like the old joke about going to a riot and a game broke out.

I'm flirting with whether or not to familiarize myself with the rules before the game/match or not. Not sure which is more entertaining.

Oh, and do I really have to eat a Vegemite sandwich?

LOL, what is it about Americans and Vegemite? We'll let you off the Vegemite hook if you buy a Swannies scarf and help us cheer the house down.

As far as the game resembling a riot, well, sometimes that's not such a bad description...

Don't worry about familiarising yourself with the rules.....the umpires (Referees) don't.

          ha!

At any given time there will be 36 players on the field (18 per side). Players will play to a position, but there are no rules governing starting positions or zones. No offside, no line-of-scrimmage.

(I'll probably taste the Vegemite for the experience of it, heck, I have eaten poi here in Hawaii (yuck!))

BTW, heard "Advance Australia Fair" outside this morning, looked out the window, two HMAS ships tied up out there, and lots of Aussie sailors on liberty out there. Cool.

Hello Random Yank! As a recovering yank myself (migrated here 4 years ago), I heartily endorse attending a game. I never was a big sport fan for anything, myself, til my first visit to Australia in '05 and I discovered AFL - most exciting sport I've ever seen.

PS I'm sure you've been warned already not to "root" for any team! Has quite a different meaning in Oz.
PPS the trick with Vegemite is to not use too much. I kept making the mistake of slathering it on like peanut butter ... I'm glad the faces I probably made weren't captured on film for posterity. In lesser amounts I've grown to like it.

Next you'll be telling the Hawaiian girls not to "root" for the Australian sailors who have just arrived there! Allies all.

Yes. But to start, try it with some avocado. Absolutely delicious, and nobody seems to know about the combination.

Naw, I wouldn't do that to a sailor, long at sea. Been at sea too long myself, back in the day. Most Aussie sailors I tipped a few with were a great bunch of blokes. Submarine service, actually, HMAS Onslow. I think she's in your museum down under in Sydney now.

But I promise not to root for the swans, perhaps I'll barracks instead?

Absolutely dead serious. It's a crime that this combination isn't more well known. I was shown it by a friend of my mum's when I was about 10, and I've been spreading the word since. Everybody I mention it to think I'm bat@@@@ insane, but once they try it they are well and truly converted.

Have it in a sandwich, or on toast with some pepper and salt. Either way, it's amazing.

                            Barracking is good. Cheer cheer.

Incidentally, there's a bit of talk about sexism in politics here at present. Someone remembered the line used by past PM Paul Keating who said of a female member of the opposition that "she couldn't get a root on a troop ship heading home." V incorrect, but funny.

It is much better on toast with melted butter, and it must be butter, none of this margarine rubbish
