Him this week* (LRT) I suspect his height will be needed in DEFENCE. They are talking Freo of playing Bradley, Pavlich, Anthony up forward. A resting ruck could rotate through there as well.

Maybe that was the ploy with LRT.
No need for him in the back line with GWS, but he could use some match practice, and a lot of height in the F50 would disadvantage them.
Freo will be a different story. I guess we'll see what they do with him in a weeks time.Comment

I had a look at the highlights and LRT got into posie well and did some good things. I am biased in that I don't see him as a Forward/Ruck. I think if they are going to play the three prong Talls we might just need him. But we will also need Seabs. I think LRT is crap in the ruck and why should he be any good he is not a ruckman so why even try to turn him into one. Seabs or White to take 2nd ruck against Freo. I just don't get Longmire persevering with this stuff, it isn't working move on.Comment

I think it is most unfair to criticize LRT for something he isn't and never has been. The criticism should be aimed at the selection panel and coach . To his credit LRT gives his best shot in the forwards and his lead to Jetta and set shot at goal was as good a forward play as I have seen at the Swans for a long while. He also give s rucking his best shot but is too short and not really a ruckman. Put him back in the backlines ,move AJ to a forward flank, bring in Lamb and TDL for some goal power up forward and watch us knock off Fremantle!Comment

I don't see a problem of playing 4 tall defenders, especially against taller teams like Freo. The Saints with Fisher, Gilbert, Blake, and Dawson and Geelong with Scarlett, Lonergan, Taylor and Mackie, did it all the time, and often had a fifth 190cm player back there as well. I think the problem in playing LRT along with Reg, Ted and AJ is how to play the usual 'small defenders' who are so critical to our game.
I think we can bring in Seaby and TDL for Everett and Parker, and perhaps give a shot as sub to Lamb in place of Cunningham and go smallish in the forward line, but have the option of playing LRT as a swingman up forward at times.
We may have a bit of short term problem getting height into the forward line until ROK and Spangher are back. But how to structure the forward line looks like persisting for a while until someone steps up and shows they can take up the second big forward position. Maybe we will just have to wait for Starling (the next Buddy Franklin).Comment

Looking at that extensive list of names who've made an appearance in our forward line since the departure of Hall and O'Loughlin, it seems we're now betting the house on Sam Reid becoming our next "big thing" up front.
He's a great mark on the lead, no doubt about that. But from what we saw on Saturday night, his kicking for goal is still a problem. He didn't even kick one!
What happens if he doesn't come good in the way we want?
We are quite exposed when it comes to reliable goal kickers. Just about everyone we've drafted in recent years to play that position seems to have come up short.Comment

Solve the Swans forward problem and we will be knocking on the door of a GF appearance with a good chance of winning it.
Unfortunately its not easy. We have NO CHOICE but to experiment! Otherwise it will be another 6th position with maybe 2 finals but no further. At the end of this season if we haven't got a forward structure that works yet again its time to get the checkbook out and offer Buddy $$$$$ to come to Sydney.Comment

Forwards seem to be a sort of after-thought in the minds of the Sydney Brains Trust. It is as though they think 'It is so easy anyone can do it' but let's face it ain't and quite a few of our backline are failed forwards, just ask Reg!Comment

Not knocking LRT knocking the coaches for insisting on playing players out of posie. LRT might have made a forward if it was done when he was younger but trying to develop him at the end of his career is idiotic. We need forwards that are going to be there for between 5-10 years not 1-2 years. We need to develop a dangerous forward structure.

1.You have to present yourself to your team mate running out of the backline or midfield and give him a target. That means breaking free.
2. If he miskicks to your opposition you look ineffectual when it is often not your fault just bad delivery
3.Once you get the ball you have to turn around to kick a goal ,your eventual destination is behind you when you make a lead.
4.often you are blocked from leading down the middle and only get the ball on a wide lead giving you a difficult shot.
5.Then there is streaming, illegal blocking, holding on to deal with (Reid is already getting heaps of this)
Compared to these things the backline is a breeze. I therefore agree with wolftone 57 and believe that the skills of someone like TDL are grossly underestimated.Kicking a bag of goals at any level is hard!Comment

When you play forward it is more difficult than playing in the backlines

Also add to that Hartijon, the difficulties in modern AFL footy of a forward who after everything you mention, has to ensure the defender doesn't get an easy passage out when the ball does hit the deck. No, forward play isn't easy at all.
After watching the reserves I'm firmly in the camp of playing TDL as soon as his match fitness allows...And the Swans are the Premiers...The Ultimate Team...The Ultimate Warriors. They have overcome the highly fancied Hawks in brilliant style. Sydney the 2012 Premiers - Gerard Whately ABC

What a catalogue of wickedness- you're lucky you're not seeing stars! He reminds him of the guys, close-set, slow, and never rattled, who were play-makers on the team. (John Updike, seeing Josh Kennedy in a crystal ball)Comment

You were too kind Dosser! No kidney crusher with the knee after they had marked? No elbow in the guts just before the ball arrives and pretend you were going for the ball< ,No thumb crusher punch that somehow completely misses the ball(I still wear this scar!) and the coup de grace, the nose spreading coat hanger. Ah..those were the days!! one umpire,no video reviews. Don't you get sad just remembering how good it was back then???Comment
