When you play forward it is more difficult than playing in the backlines
1.You have to present yourself to your team mate running out of the backline or midfield and give him a target.That means breaking free.
2. If he miskicks to your opposition you look ineffectual when it is often not your fault just bad delivery
3.Once you get the ball you have to turn around to kick a goal ,your eventual destination is behind you when you make a lead.
4.often you are blocked from leading down the middle and only get the ball on a wide lead giving you a difficult shot.
5.Then there is streaming, illegal blocking, holding on to deal with (Reid is already getting heaps of this)

Compared to these things the backline is a breeze. I therefore agree with wolftone 57 and believe that the skills of someone like TDL are grossly underestimated.Kicking a bag of goals at any level is hard!

You agreed with my point exactly. I believe Forward line is the hardest part of the ground to play in today's game. That is why I believe Specialist Forwards are a must. Look at all the top sides, they have a group of Specialist Forwards. This is why I say ask Reg how hard it is to play forward. He came to us with quite a reputation as a CHF in the SANFL but vcouldn't crack it in that posie here. Great backman though.

Geelong have these players as their main Forward Group; The Pod, Hawk, Stokes, Stevie J, Byrnes, Duncan and Varcoe. That doesn't include the resting mids or Lonergan who occasionally plays there and can seriously hurt you on the scoreboard .These blokes are all Specialist Forwards.

Collingwood; Blair, Cloke, Dawes, Didak, Fasolo and Krakouer. Collingwood in the next few years is probably going to be relying more on the mids to kick a bag and that does not bode well even though their mids are very good.

Hawthorn; Buddy, Roughy, Lewis (also plays mid but is a specialist HF), Osborne, Rioli (also plays mids but bought as a small forward) and Bruest (30 goals mostly as sub last year).

All these players kick goals and as you see with Breust 30 goals from mostly games he played sub in his 17 games last year. With Buddy and Roughy and the foils they will be a very hard task for any team to match up on. This is what we have to aspire to for a chance of a Premiership.

Just watched the replay. Always gives a better insight than you get at the game or watching it live on TV because you know the result, can rewind incidents etc.

LRT did ok on Saturday and will almost always be in the 22.

Everitt failed to take, dropped or fumbled every ball he contested, I didn't realise how bad he really was until the replay. Can't see he adds anything to the 22 so it's time to promote someone else.

TDL was great in the ressies and deserves his chance, is genuinely smart and talented.

Lamb can't be far off either, another clever player.

I Dont think anyone is saying LRT was hopeless and didnt have a go. He always has a go. But he is not a forward, and if we expect to progress higher up the ladder and have an impact in September, it wont be with LRT as one of our main forward targets.

But he put in at contest, unlike his mate.

It's funny, all the hoo-ha this week about Cloke jogged my memory to a few years ago, when he was all potential and he couldn't kick straight to save himself. Look at him now - seen as one of the KPPs of the competition and worth of big dollars. Makes me think of what future lies ahead for young Sam Reid - he could be anything in a few years and we've got him all tied up - how good is that?!?!

Also makes me think of what Jesse could be, but it doesn't look like he'll really ever get there. Andrejs ain't the answer really, so perhaps we need LRT as a foil up forward for at least part of the time. I would replace Andrejs with TDL and keep LRT for balance for the next few games...

LRT did some good things, he put his body on the line and led well. Unfortunately it is not enough and I agree he isn't a ruckman. I think next week he will be down back as Dockers have a very tall forward line and rest the rucks in the forward line on a regular basis. We need specialist forwards who know how to lead to position regularly and kick goals. We need them to give Sam some confidence too.

I think Seabs will come in this week. This is a matter of horses for courses (no pun intended). TDL and maybe Lamb need to come in too.
