Cheer squads are the most embarrassing aspect of AFL. No need for them and most time the people involved are, well..you know. They also love excluding people and seem to have this opinion that they represent all of us.

And whats meant for kids is usually filled with umm adults with umm special needs.

Usually, at the end of the game, I can't talk, so a clapper might come in handy, as for chanting, well, It started in that weagles game at the SCG some years ago in the pouring rain, and we won a tight contest, so it has it's place. It wasn't just the cheer squad that night I can assure u

One of the very best chant song events ever......you just had to be there......indescribable. Round 22 1996.

Started in the Noble if I remember correctly. Still one of the most spine tingling things I've ever witnessed at a footy match.

The clappers are a symptom of the perceived lack of passion in our Sydney support base.

I'm not sure, but I don't think I've seen them used at any other club's home matches. I don't remember seeing them at any of the games I've been to in Melbourne, whether we were involved or not.

The clappers are an annoying by-product of our sponsorship deal with Citibank, and not as a result of passion or lack thereof. From memory I think I've seen them at Wallabies games too - can anyone confirm this?

didnt Airport West have those balloon clapper things when they first signed up with 3? and didnt we have them as well for a while?

and yeah nothing but a marketing tool..nothing to do with lack of passion.

If you've seen them at Wallabies games, it's no surprise, because they're renowned for lacking atmosphere and passion as well.

this may be stupid, but what exactly do the clappers you all are referring to look like? I've only ever been to victorian games and the only clappers I've seen are the plastic hand ones.. I assume that's not them?

They are sheets of cardboard that are folded, concertina-like. Held at one end, the folded pieces clap together to make an almighty noise.

I may have used them but I'm not saying.

Totally agree. The member who sits behind me often brings two young boys who indiscriminately bang these things all through the match, right behind my head. I end up with a nauseous headache which spoils a great game of footy. One week there was nearly a fight (as in "The Slap") between the man sitting beside me (who turned around and complained) and the father of these boys. I HATE the things. I once emailed the Club about them but that had as much effect as my email about Tom Waterhouse - so you might be right BBB!

I agree Meg, they would be utterly annoying right behind you especially by an unrestricted child.

My nephew sometimes has them but I certainly restrict his use. I tell him instead to take them home and go nuts. The irate phone call from his mother is hilarious fun.
