Different question. Did Sydney committ too much to Dunks jnr, knowing he was just a maybe. Enough for Mills but now just a poke in the dark with late 40s pickComment

With all this rigmarole, we will end up spending our original 1st and 2nd round picks (14 & 33) for Mills if he's bid at pick 3. No one would complain about that. And then we have a 3rd and 4th rounder left over. So if you accept that Mills is worth our first 2 picks, then everything looks quite normal, despite all the shuffling.Comment

By my calculations....If Mills goes at pick #3 then we have to cough up 1787 points (includes 20% discount)
We have picks # 33 = 563, # 36= 502, #37= 483, # 44=362, #54=220, #69=49, #72=19
So by giving away 33,36, 37, 54, 72...equals exactly 1787
That leaves us picks 44, 69 and Mills....Pretty good I'd think.
I'll post this in the draft thread also.Comment

I had the pleasure of watching him play quite a few times in junior footy. As I have said previously he's just not that good. I'm happy to eat my words if he becomes a regular first team player on an AFL list.Comment

What I love about draft season is that almost always the previous season the next season is seen as a strong draft. Then as next season arrives it is said to be one of the shallowest drafts of all time. Yet out of every draft, gems emerge who weren't even rated and over rated high picks fall by the wayside. The clubs say they are very happy with their picks and wax lyrical about the prospects and qualities of their picks, and how they have covered their needs. Can't wait for the comedy to commence.
I wonder how the people who have convinced young Dunkley to stay in the most livable city will feel, if he gets picked up by the Peptide Club or the perennial wooden spooners. With their pick ups so far the spooners look odds on to win the VFL flag. Get on at whatever odds. By the way which of these 2 clubs will be the first to say they have done well and have set the foundation for finals in 5 years.Comment

His old man would struggle to get a game in the modern game with his foot skills, gawd they were appalling.
He'll be a squad player at best I'd sayComment

Mills plus a couple of late picks will do us quite well for this year. Though to be honest I'm much more looking forward to the scenario that we are seeing with Brisbane where they will be recruiting about four genuine draftees, including two in the top 20 but none in the top 10.
We are on the record as saying that our goal is to see our products start to get drafted by other clubs and that will be success for us. It is a shame that no other clubs actually takes the time to genuinely assess how critical TO THE GAME these academies are and also how they need to to be tied to a pathway. It is simple, if the academies don't grow the talent pool then the playing standard of the comp will noticeably drop. there's a good argument to say that 14 is the ideal number of sides but the jump from 16 to 18 clubs saw the need to generate an additional 100 senior footballers in Australia - where are they coming from Gillon?Comment

With free agency and the rookie system working well for us you could argue that we really only need to draft two players a year so a gun coupled with a late second rounder could be our tactics in the year when we have a standout.
The other years, like next year for example, we may well go for a more traditional approachComment

Yep, it all seems like a lot of work for not much return.

We also need to draft players who can actually hit the side of a barn with a drop punt, hopefully with a screw punt too. Make good decisions on whether to HB or kick and are cool under pressure. I know some of that comes with exposure to AFL footy but if they don't have these qualities at junior level they probably will never have them.Comment

Football has certainly changed a lot when you have a young guy who isn't a definite top 5 talent thinking that potentially waiting a few years to get a regular senior game is too long.I knew him as a gentle young man, I cannot say for sure the reasons for his decline
We watched him fade before our very eyes, and years before his timeComment
