      Dunkley: Yeah, I wanna join the Swans.
      Step 1: troll everyone
      Step 2: lol which dad gets a nice little sense of payback

        Like most others on here, I loved the way his old man went about it (other than kicking), but from what I've read about Josh,

        he's a big bodied, slowish mid, good overhead mark, below average disposal skills....

        Sounds similar to his dad other than the position he plays, and the era he plays in (footy is a lot different to when dad played).

        Happy that he's chosen the Swans because it means we get him at a discount.

        Though I'm not overly excited... But then again Josh Kennedy read about the same, so here's hoping.
        Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it's time to pause and reflect... MT

          It's been a fairly underwhelming process - player clearly reluctant and club having other priorities and making their interest conditional.

          Kinnear Beatson says he expects our first pick after matching the bid for Mills to be in the 50's - which seems to indicate we think an early bid is certain. The lack of depth in this draft makes taking Dunkley at a discount a decent option rather than an even less credentialed kid in the 40-60 range.

          It's probably still not beyond possibility that there has been an understanding/agreement reached, eg. if certain (VIC) clubs bid for him we wouldn't match it (we'd just explain it away as saying we thought the price was too high, we had another player who was still available in mind etc), but otherwise we will take him. It seems unlikely, but if he was telling us as late as earlier this week that he wasn't going to nominate, you never know what we might have agreed to if it meant we were at least remained a chance of recruiting him.

                For what it's worth, the knocks on Dunkley Jnr are basically the exact same as they were on Parker...too slow, can't kick, only dominant because he was physically more developed etc.

                The positives are also identical; tough, mature body, great overhead, natural leader, loves to tackle.

                Here's hoping...

                  I'd think we have been pretty straight up and held our cards close to our chest.

                  You'd think that nonce Josh is in the system away from the poison of his old man that he will come to appreciate he made the right decision

                    I'm not sure what you meant but, in the UK, nonce is a slang word for pedophiles in the gaol system.

                      Really? You don't think that when Mug typed "nonce", they might have simply meant "once"

                          Yes, it was "once" I meant to type

                          Now this has all settled and assuming that we actually draft Josh it is interesting to see the upshot of the academy and F/S changes in response to the complete OTT hysteria of Eddie et al.

                          I say OTT hysteria in respect of us (and Brisbane and the Gold Coast) as it is telling that Mills will be the first Top 10 pick from Sydney (as opposed to Central Coast of Newcastle) EVER. Perhaps Eddie should contemplate that for a second when saying how our academy is somehow destroying the game.

                          I'm not sure, however, that I don't have a degree of sympathy with Eddie et all when it comes to the GWS recruitment zone as there is no reason why that zone shouldn't provide a couiple of first rounders year in year out with no effort from the GWS mob, FFS the two kids they will recruit in 2017 are already boarding at Melbourne private schools and somehow GWS have them earmarked for their academy. THAT needs to be addressed.

                          Anyway the upshot is that we finished fifth in 2015 and are still able to draft Mills and Dunks without giving up any players of note and without going into deficit. And if there was another gun we could have fairly easily accommodated him instead of Dunks by giving up our first rounder next year which would have slipped.

                          The system I think is pretty fair. The old system would have allowed us to potentially draft four first rounders with no penalty at all and I think this system works. It allows us to attract one very good academy kid rated 4 - 8 plus a second rounder with no real penalty and I think that is a fair advantage.

                          Likewise Brisbane are going to be able to get Schache at #2 who is an absolute gun plus 4 academy kids, two of which are first round rated. For the first time they can recruit not worrying about the go home factor. 2016 is massive for them.

                          Gold Coast are a real worry. I know that area has produced the likes of Reiwoldt in the past but I think the demographics in that area have changed. A lot of those Gold Coast products were a result of kids of Victorian refugees in the 1980s and I just don't think that migration is happening any more. they have the worst and most expensive recruitment zone to manage so I can only see the academy system being of limited benefit to them.

                          As an aside I've looked at the picks we have for this year and moved then forward a couple of spots to allow for "matching creep" (Live Picks 32,34,35,40, 48 and 62 ) and this is couple of combos of what we would been able to afford with our points in a less top heavy situation

                          * Pick 12, 22, 28 and 34
                          * Pick 10, 18 and 24
                          * Pick 6, 15 and 41
                          * Pick 7 and 8 and a Rookie upgrade with miniscule deficit

                          Some pretty good options there for a team that finished 5th

                              Technically he is a Coastie (Killarney Vale I think) though he had some connection later on with Penno (U19s I assume)
