If you take at face value what Ireland has said in the media today (and I challenge anyone in the industry not to take him at his word), that is exactly what already happens. It is easy to validate (for anyone with access to the detailed information - ie the AFL) for those on base salaries, which will be any draftee in their first contract. It is obviously harder for those on subsequent contracts since each is individually negotiated but still possible to do some kind of assessment for mid-tier players, at least.

I'm not doubting Ireland for a moment. I'm just saying that if they clearly separate out the base amount and then specify the loading for COL separately, then it would remove any doubt about this extra amount being hoarded to pay one or two extra players as opposed to being applied evenly across the entire list.If you take at face value what Ireland has said in the media today (and I challenge anyone in the industry not to take him at his word), that is exactly what already happens. So for round numbers sake, Salary Cap is 8mil, and 10% allowance. Just lodge a contract with the rate being 500k and then 10% being 50k as the COL loading and then the 500k is what counts in the 8mil. Easy.

The more appropriate concession is the relocation allowance. The reflection of the fact expansion teams have to attract footballers away from their home states.
This concession should be pulled once Sydney (or NSW) start producing 1/9th of AFL players.Comment

Swans salary cap concessions
The problem is that baked beans are a lot more expensive in Sydney than Melbourne. It's not about choices the players make - it is about where the club is located.Comment

How about if you have to pay 25% more in rent to live in an equivalent suburb?
And how about if your can of baked beans and loaf of bread cost more?Comment

I suppose the real question is whether any players are actually swayed by the 10% COL allowance (i.e. is it actually making a difference in our player retention)?
I could see it making a difference for rookies and new draftees, but I doubt that it would have really made a difference in the Tippett deal, or in the last contracts signed by Bolton, Goodes, Reid or Hannebery, etc. I could be wrong, but I'd be surprised if the difference between our players staying and going was that 10%.Comment

Well you can choose to eat those baked beans at a fancy restaurant or you can eat those baked beans at a roadside diner. You shouldnt be paid more just because you do the former.Comment

Tom scully and Ablett didnt leave for bake beans ?
They have family, friends, established clubs etc etc that they could have stayed at but they chose the opportunity of a new challenge and most importantly an increased pay cheque !
If Josh Kennedy was told by the Hawks they wanted him to stay 3 yrs ago and offered him the same as the Swans........what would have Josh done?
.............
The AFL wants Sydney to be successful..........and each club or as the AFL would see it (each Business Unit) needs to be sustainable and any corporation in Sydney needs to pay a salary that matches the expense of the city"be tough, only when it gets tough"

I don't know about the Lions, the comparison is valid from a point of view that both states are 100 years behind melbourne in junior development and reserves playing standard. While we have 22 playing, 10 in the NEAFL, what are the rest doing? How is their development helped by watching? No both states need help of some description to remain competitive, while it's cheaper to live in Qld and may be more attractive to some players, some sort of draft concession would see them at least partially compensated for the lack of junior development.Ireland explained how it works this morning. We work within the same salary cap as all other teams THEN ad 10% to the contracts. So every player on the list gets a 10% COL adjustment to a standard contract. The only exception is the Rookies who get "a bit more than 10%."
So all this talk about us using the COL to go out and buy marquee players is complete crap.

Not that baked beans are relevant to anything, but which fancy restaurants serve baked beans? Am I able to take those beans and eat them at a roadside diner? (Premium beans, cheap location)He ate more cheese, than time allowedComment

I can see and appreciate the point you are trying to make, the fact of the matter is that these boys, because of logistics, HAVE to live in the Eastern Suburbs of Sydney and that is some of the most expensive real estate in the country! I would think that we would be the only club in the competition that really needs their players in a specific location or at least in an area where there truly is no cheaper alternative.
If they didn't get a pay packet reflective of the cost of where they have to live, they would have no choice BUT to eat baked beans on toast!
My thoughts on it anyway.....Comment

Just playing around with census data, I've learned that for median rent in Clovelly ($520/w) you can live literally anywhere in Melbourne including the CBD ($416/w), East Melbourne ($416/w) Cremorne ($460/w) or Richmond ($369).
So for the cost of Maroubra ($430/W) you could live basically in the centre of Melbourne.Comment

Also, what if the club dietitian says they're not allowed to eat baked beans? Do they risk censure from the club to get around the cost of living allowance.
So many conundrums. He ate more cheese, than time allowedComment
