With BJ it's not about lack of ability (which he has in spades) it's about belief. You have to feel sympathy for the kid. He must feel like every decision he makes during a game may not only cost his side but his place in the team. By sticking with him I think Longmire is trying to remove the latter factor from his mind.Comment

One area where we may be exposed later in the season is our tall timber. If teams can stay close for 3 quarters they'll have a good chance of running over us in the last. Port Adelaide nearly did it last week. When the finals roll around we'll need explosive runners in decent form on the bench like BJ and Rohan.Comment

The problem and the blessing of BJ is that you just don't notice him. He set up two of our goal attempts against Port, with quick and accurate passes by foot to a marking forward. I may have missed one or two. His second efforts are quick and decisive.
You just have to concentrate on watching him alone to see what he is doing. Best to kick back with a replay for that. He is actually a sneaky player. We and they forget he is there, and then woomf. He is also still a kid, strong, but in adult AFL player terms not much of him. He will be fine. They all had to have a season or two + under their belts before becoming 'grown up' in the game. Especially the guys with his build.
LRT was 'hopeless', I wanted Macca thrown out, and etc. We also forget that someone like Tom D has now only had 15 games of senior footy under his belt, and we want sparkles and stars from him. A RUCKMAN with FIFTEEN senior games. What do we actually expect from the backup bloke? Miracles? Well, yes, it seems we do and he has in my opinion delivered.
We have been spoiled in real terms you know. The club has been cleverly importing ready made AFL players with experience and unrecognised ability, and we are getting to be a bit used to that, and expecting all of them on the list to be seriously useful from the get go.
As for Zac. You beauty. And he is. Not a surprise to me, in fact a couple of us predicted it during the week. Think Luke, hard and ready to go. We predict he is a keeper.Last edited by Primmy; 20 June 2014, 09:51 AM.If you've never jumped from one couch to the other to save yourself from lava then you didn't have a childhoodComment

Where else is BJ going to get the experience of playing AFL if not in the 1's? The first year or two of Macca's life he couldn't hit a barn door. As for Kizz. Mal. Peb for that matter. Jude bounced around like a puppy for at least a year or two. Adam used to get his head bitten off all the time. Jetts couldn't kick a goal to save himself.
A few deep breaths and a bit of faith are in order. If the coaches are ok, I mean the paid ones not us, then.......If you've never jumped from one couch to the other to save yourself from lava then you didn't have a childhoodComment

The amount if chasing and closing down that Brendan does is very valuable. A lot of his work does not end in a stat because he does not always get to tackle, but the pressure leads to some rushed possessions for the opposition. This in turn helps the next line to defend a rebound more easily. If ROK was playing Brendan's position then the opposition would be pinpointing passes to the next line with ease.
He is a lovely kick with great speed. A couple of times against Port he had the ball 75m out in space, but was trying to hard to find a teammate. In that position I would like him to channel Franklin and use his speed and long kick to attack the Goal Square if it's open.Comment

It will be interesting to see who gets the vest.
You'd think probably Jones...I hope not.
I've never liked first gamers given the vest.
They have to sit on the bench fretting, then come on thinking they have to make an immediate impact, no time to settle. That's a hard gig for a first gamer.
So whilst I don't disagree with you Primmy, I do hope BJ wears the vest this week.Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it's time to pause and reflect... MTComment

Oh God. I just imagined him trying to do that.
Which makes sense, because that what he plays like.-Comment

But he doesn't get the footy enough. If as you say he worries about decisions he makes, then he is probably making poor decisions. Like hitting the post from the goalsquare and kicking short when running clear into goal. Doesn't look like he has the hardness of his brother. Give him time, but not in the 1's at this stage.
I really think it's a confidence thing that won't be resolved by him playing in the 2's. He needs a good, solid game in the 1's and, with injuries, the next couple of rounds are probably the perfect time to do it.Comment

I'm rapt Jones has been given an opportunity. Hopefully he won't be given the vest. Disappointed Membrey has not been named. He must be getting very frustrated. Beautiful morning here in Melbourne with chance of late showers, so it will not be too wet. So I expect both Pyke and Derickx to play. Hopefully Pyke spends majority of time forward to take a defender off buddy.Comment
